Lagrein is an ancient indigenous grape variety, captivating with its dark ruby to garnet red color. The wine offers aromas of violets, blackberries, blueberries, and blackcurrants. On the palate, the Cantina Tramin Urban Lagrein is well-structured, impressive with its typically tart nuances, full-bodied, and with velvety tannins. Forest berries meet bittersweet chocolate, culminating in a long-lasting finish. This high-quality, complex Lagrein wonderfully complements hearty Tyrolean dishes, especially game dishes and dark meats, and stands up to aged mountain cheeses.

Cantina Tramin – Winemaking

Following a dry winter and an initially cold March, above-average temperatures in spring 2020 favored early bud break and premature flowering. The weather from mid-May to early June was predominantly humid. During the subsequent ripening phase, rainfall was quite balanced, with only a few hot days causing short dry spells. Pleasantly cool nights characterized the summer. The grape harvest began in early September and was repeatedly interrupted by individual rainy days until mid-October, fortunately alternating with ample sunny periods. The white wines are fresh and offer an intense olfactory experience. The red wines are fine and elegant, hinting at great aging potential.

The 20 to 100-year-old vines for this South Tyrolean red wine from Cantina Tramin are located on hillsides between 230-300 m above sea level with limestone, porphyry, and sandy loam soils. The exposure of the vineyards varies greatly. Half are west-facing, 40% southwest-facing, and 10% south-facing. The grapes were harvested at the time of optimal physiological ripeness from early to late October and transported in small containers to the winery building, where they were destemmed. Maceration fermentation takes place in large wooden vats at a controlled temperature (28°C), followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged in barriques for 12 months and then for an additional 6 months in concrete tanks. After bottling, the wine is aged for at least another 6 months in the bottle. Only 20,000 bottles of Urban Lagrein are produced.

Urban Lagrein Riserva – a wine and its values

13.5% vol. alcohol

5.4g/l acidity

2.6g/l residual sugar

50 Hl/hectare yield

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0905/1124/5646/files/cantina-tramin-urban-lagrein-riserva-2020.jpg?v=1751009330
