The Sopron site, Steiner, is located right at the southwest tip. Around 130 years ago, the Furmint Ausbruch originating from here was world-famous; in the city chronicle of 1680, it was classified as the most valuable vineyard in all of Western Hungary (today's Burgenland). But then came phylloxera, the two world wars, and the Iron Curtain. So Franz replanted Furmint: the scions for this came from the genetic vine heritage of Michael Wenzel from Rust and Attila Homonna from Tokaj. The first vintage in 2018 proved natural wine pioneer Weninger's gut feeling right: Furmint belongs here!

The grape variety, with its vigorous growth, buds quite early, making it susceptible to frost. It ripens very slowly and is usually not harvested until the end of October. Of the approximately 5300 hectares of vineyards worldwide, 4200 are in Hungary, mainly in the Tokaj wine region. But don't worry, Franz Weninger harvests his grapes early and vinifies the Furmint dry.

And it is already a rarity, this assertive archetype of a Furmint: bone-dry yet with a ripe, golden aroma, powerful without being heavy, rather little fruit, but with overflowing minerality and a flintstone character that lingers in the long finish. Franz says: a wine that might even outlive me.

Franz Weninger – Wine Production

The loosely-berried Furmint grapes for this wine come from a vineyard belonging to Weninger's winery on the Hungarian side of the border in Sopron. For legal reasons, the wine cannot be called by the name of the Steiner site, so Franz simply calls it Stein. Here, gneiss and mica schist reach the surface, making the soil porous, dry, and warm. The barren soil seems ideal for the grape variety. 5,800 vines are planted per hectare in a Guyot training system and compete for water and nutrients, rooting deeply into the soil. The 24-year-old vines, 20-year-old vines were grafted in 2017, stand at an altitude of 184 meters, where a Pannonian climate shaped by the large, shallow lake prevails.

Petra and Franz Weninger cultivate the vineyards of the Weninger winery organically, biodynamically, and they are Respekt certified. The thin-skinned Furmint grapes were selectively hand-picked in September 2021. After harvesting, they were gently pressed and spontaneously fermented in 500-liter barrels. The Furmint matured for 11 months in large wooden barrels on its lees without added sulfur, underwent a natural, biological malolactic fermentation, and was bottled unfiltered with minimal sulfur addition (10mg/l) in August 2022 into 3,000 bottles.

Furmint – a wine and its values

Grape variety Furmint

12.5% Vol. Alcohol

6.3 g/l Acidity

1.0 g/l Residual sugar

Organic Control Body BIO-AT-402 – EU Agriculture
