Pflüger Riesling – from the Dürkheim Michelsberg vineyard
The Pflüger Michelsberg Riesling 2018 is a single-vineyard wine from Dürkheim's GROSSE LAGE Michelsberg in the Palatinate. This organic wine is characterized by its marl soils and by aromas of yellow stone fruit, exotic fruits, and a fine herbal spice. This elegant Riesling is distinct and rich on the palate and has a long-lasting finish.
The Pflüger Michelsberg Riesling is dense with a fine creaminess and a good acidity structure, which is wonderfully cushioned by a little residual sugar. It pairs with a wide variety of dishes and leaves a lasting impression. Its elegant character makes it a perfect companion to hearty Palatinate cuisine, such as Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach) with roasted potatoes or Flammkuchen (tarte flambée).
Pflüger Winery – Wine Production
The old Riesling vines for this Pflüger wine grow in organically cultivated vineyards in the Dürkheim GROSSE LAGE Michelsberg. This site is one of the best and most distinctive sites in the Palatinate Mittelhaardt. Laid out in terraces, it represents a pure south-facing slope.
The soil, typical for the Palatinate and a good heat conductor, allows for well-ripened grapes. To be able to harvest these in autumn, winemaker Alexander Pflüger has been working according to biodynamic principles since 2008, refraining from artificial fertilizers, as well as herbicides and insecticides, following the course of the seasons and the moon, and working as close to nature as possible. The Pflüger Winery is Demeter certified.
The selective hand-picking of the small, highly concentrated grapes often takes place in several passes. In the winery's pressing house, which is located opposite the saltworks in Bad Dürkheim, the grapes are gently processed further. The mash is pressed with gentle pressure and the must is spontaneously fermented. The reductive aging in steel tanks creates a typical, aromatic Riesling. It remains on the lees for a long time and is aged in stainless steel tanks; a small part matures in wooden barrels.
