J. Neus Winery – Red Wine Tradition from Ingelheim
The J. Neus Winery was founded in Ingelheim in 1881 by Josef Neus and has stood for a great red wine tradition for 140 years. As early as 1814, none other than the poet and thinker Johann Wolfgang von Goethe praised the good "red Ingelheimer" and enjoyed it in the red wine town at the Gasthaus Zur alten Post.
J. Neus Winery – the future in new hands
When the family winery could not find a successor in 2012, Mainz entrepreneur Christian Schmitz stepped in, not only enabling the preservation of the listed neoclassical villa, including its operational buildings and English garden, but also ensuring the continuation of the J. Neus Winery.
Today, magnificent Pinot Noir grapes grow on old vines in calcareous Ingelheim soils in prime locations, such as Mainzer Horn or Pares. From these, operations manager Lewis Schmitt and winemaker Toni Frank produce impressive Pinot Noirs. These wines are stored in some ancient large wooden barrels from the winery's early years in the longest vaulted cellar in Rheinhessen. 15 hectares are managed close to nature. In addition to Spätburgunder, Frühburgunder, and St. Laurent, the grape variety mirror also includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Weißburgunder, Riesling, Silvaner, and Chardonnay, with Spätburgunder accounting for two-thirds of the area. Thanks to the new owner, we can look forward to great Burgundies from J. Neus Winery in the future.
