Andres & Mugler – Sekt Manufactory since 1989
The Andres & Mugler Sekt manufactory was founded in 1989, so to speak, on a whim for sparkling wine, when the two friends and Palatinate vintners Michael Andres and Steffen Mugler tasted sparkling wines together and wondered if Sekt couldn't be better, more artisanal, with more terroir. So the two started on their first barrel. Their first Sekt was to be made from 1000 liters of Riesling. Produced entirely according to the traditional method, with a second fermentation in the bottle, long aged on the lees, disgorged by hand with fine perlage and an expressive bouquet – that's how their Palatinate Sekt was to be. Their first work sold like hotcakes and received so much praise that Steffen and Michael decided to found the Andres & Mugler Sekt Manufactory.
Andres & Mugler – Sekt from their own grapes
About 30 years later, the Sekts from the Andres & Mugler Sekt manufactory are among the top sparkling wines of the Palatinate. Both Michael and Steffen each have their own winery in the Palatinate, which they cultivate close to nature, and here they can select the grapes that are best suited for Sekt production. Their good sites, such as the Deidesheimer Maushöhle or the Ruppertsberger Reiterpfad, have been organic certified since 2006, and even biodynamic since 2010. For both of them, biodynamics is more than a philosophy; it is a fundamental attitude to life with mindful awareness. A caring, a looking out for nature, for people, and for oneself.
Thus, they work in the vineyard and cellar in harmony with nature, follow the rhythm of the moon phases, abstain from chemicals, and prefer to protect and strengthen their vines with preparations and natural teas. Over time, they create a balanced ecosystem in a circular economy that allows healthy grapes to grow and forms the basis for their organic Sekt. A lot of manual work is necessary, not only in the vineyard, but also in the cellar during the second fermentation in the bottle, when adding the tirage, riddling the bottles, and disgorging. But this grounds the two Sekt makers. "Making Sekt exactly as we want: that's a feeling of freedom," notes Michael Andres. It's also a feeling of freedom for us to have Sekt from this small Sekt manufactory in our assortment for you.
