Enjoy the Fleur d'Emely Brut 2023 - Organic Sparkling Wine from Andres & Mugler

The organic sparkling wine Fleur d'Emely Brut 2023 is arguably the most extraordinary sparkling wine from Andres & Mugler in the Palatinate and, unfortunately, always sells out much too quickly. This fine sparkling wine is characterized by its aromatic grape varieties, Muscat and Sauvignon Blanc, and the terroir from which they originate: the Ruppertsberger Reiterpfad. The name of the vineyard site dates back to the Romans, who passed through here with their horses. The vineyard site was formed during the Cretaceous period, when the Earth's crust bulged and eventually ruptured, leading to the formation of the Upper Rhine Graben, with sediments such as sand and calcium shells from marine animals in the top layer and lime deposits in the lower layer. These are precisely what are responsible for the unmistakable acid structure and the lush, yellow fruit aromas of the wines and sparkling wines from the Reiterpfad.

Thus, the popular Fleur d'Emely organic sparkling wine from Andres & Mugler is intensely yellow-fruited and juicy, with an impressive grape fragrance, joined by yellow peach and passion fruit, elderflower, and lemon balm. This fine-bubbled organic sparkling wine from Germany is a true hidden gem—juicy and fragrant, easy-drinking yet sophisticated, lush in aroma yet possessing a cool, stony minerality, wonderfully dry with a fine, mineral acidity and a long-lasting, lively perlage. The Andres & Mugler Fleur d'Emely Brut organic sparkling wine is produced using traditional bottle fermentation.

The Andres & Mugler sparkling wine estate has three cuvées named after their children: Elena, the daughter of Michael and Uschi, and Louis and Emely, the children of Steffen and Daniela.

Organic sparkling wine – how the Fleur d'Emely Brut is made

The Muscat and Sauvignon Blanc grapes for this Andres Mugler organic sparkling wine grow on mineral soils in the Palatinate, specifically in the famous Ruppertsberger Reiterpfad site. Cool winds from the nearby Palatinate Forest ensure good acid structure in the early-harvested base wines, which is essential for good sparkling wine.

The quality philosophy of the Andres Mugler sparkling wine estate begins with careful soil cultivation and consistent green cover. The vineyard work, such as pruning, performed by Michael Andres and Steffen Mugler, is pure craftsmanship and characterized by a great love for biodynamics. The rhythm of nature significantly influences their actions. For both, healthy soil, intact flora and fauna, and consequently a vigorous vine, are prerequisites for a healthy circular economy. Thus, they harvest all biodynamically farmed vineyard sites by hand in order to bring the grapes to the sparkling wine estate in Ruppertsberg undamaged.

Here, the Muscat and Sauvignon Blanc are then gently pressed, because the gentler the pressing, the fewer tannins and waxes from the berry skins get into the must, and the finer and more long-lasting the perlage in the sparkling wine will appear later. Only about two-thirds of the juice present in the berries is extracted.

In the cellar, Steffen Mugler and Michael Andres give their sparkling wines time. The grapes are allowed to ferment slowly and rest on the fine lees. The following year, the Fleur d'Emely Brut is bottled and the *tirage* is added to trigger the second fermentation in the bottle. Now the sparkling wine is allowed to rest and mature for another year on the fine lees; it is regularly shaken and the bottles are increasingly inverted and shaken by hand, until the final stage when the yeast plug is removed by hand during disgorging, and the Andres Mugler organic sparkling wine Fleur d'Emely Brut rests in the bottle without the addition of a dosage until "it is good when it comes out," as Steffen emphasizes.

Andres & Mugler – the sparkling wine makers

The Andres & Mugler sparkling wine estate in Ruppertsberg was founded in 1989 by the two friends and Palatinate winemakers Michael Andres and Steffen Mugler. In the first few years, base wines were purchased and processed into sparkling wine, but since 1993, only grapes from their own cultivation have been used. On a total of 17 hectares (7 ha for Michael and 10 ha for Steffen), the estate practices biodynamic viticulture, growing Riesling and white Burgundy varieties such as Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, and Chardonnay, as well as Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir in the best vineyard sites of the Palatinate. From these grapes, German sparkling wine with an unmistakable, elegant style is created using traditional bottle fermentation. Sparkling wine from Germany at the highest level and in organic quality. In 2019, two sparkling wines were rated as very good at the Meininger German Sparkling Wine Award for the first time, followed in 2021 by the award from Eichelmann's "Germany's Wines" as the best sparkling wine collection of 2021. Bravo. The Andres & Mugler sparkling wine estate is a member of "die Sektmacher," the association of traditional sparkling wine producers.
