Balthasar Ress – Rheingau Riesling
The Balthasar Ress winery in Hattenheim is renowned for its Rheingau Riesling. The history of the Ress family is long and dates back to the 19th century. Originally, the Ress family were enterprising butchers in Hattenheim. In 1870, Balthasar Ress founded a winery, a wine merchant business, and an inn. The brand "Von Unserem," whose wines remain an important pillar for the Ress family today, originates from this era. In 1894, Balthasar Ress purchased the later legendary Kronenschlösschen from a bankruptcy estate. It seems all of the Ress descendants possessed a keen business sense, as they gradually acquired what is now the "Alte Gutshaus" and increasingly more vineyard plots in prime locations such as the "Hattenheimer Engelmannsberg," the "Berg Rottland," the monopoly vineyard "Schloss Reichartshausen," and the "Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen," as well as the Weinhaus Engel in the Drosselgasse and the Hasensprung export winery.
Balthasar Ress – with innovative ideas
Since 1989, Balthasar Ress has been a member of the VDP, the elite of German viticulture – easily recognizable by the eagle on the wine bottle. Today, the winery encompasses 55 hectares and has been managed by the fifth generation, Christian Ress, since 2010. He, too, possesses an intuitive sense for good business and continues to cause a stir with consistent quality management and innovative ideas, such as planting the northernmost vineyard on Sylt and opening the wineBANK in Hattenheim.
