Balthasar Ress – Hattenheimer Engelmannsberg Riesling

The Balthasar Ress Hattenheimer Engelmannsberg Riesling 2012 is a dry white wine from the VDP.ERSTE LAGE in the Rheingau.

VDP. ERSTE LAGE designates wines from classified sites that exhibit particularly high quality potential due to their microclimate and soil geology. They are growths with international aspirations. The wines from Balthasar Ress from the VDP. ERSTE LAGEN are a homage to the soils, the microclimate, and thus to their home. The goal is to produce the wines as authentically as possible. Thus, during winemaking, any enological innovations and procedures, as well as the use of pure yeast cultures, are consciously avoided.

This is what Falstaff says: Somewhat reductive on the nose, ripe fruit, a hint of caramel. Really dry on the palate, straightforward. The acidity perfectly integrated, with momentum into the long finish. The fruit is rather citrusy and characterized by green apple. Very drinkable despite its austerity.

We store aged wines professionally: lying down, in the dark, in their original carton, and in a warehouse with constant temperature, regulated by geothermal and solar energy. This rarity is only available in limited quantities.

Rheingau – the Hattenheimer Engelmannsberg site

The Engelmannsberg site is located west of the road leading from Hattenheim to Kloster Eberbach. To the north, it borders the Schützenhaus site and to the east, the Hassel. Although the site is rather flat, it is crisscrossed by vineyard hedges and old dry stone walls. The name of the site, Engelmannsberg, goes back to the knight "Engilmann" of Hattenheim, who bequeathed his vineyards to Kloster Eberbach in 1321. The soil consists mainly of loess loam, Tertiary marl soils, and clay lenses. Due to its deep structure, the soil is able to ensure a high potential of water, minerals, and nutrients even in dry years. The soil optimally supplies the roots, which can spread easily. The wines from the Engelmannsberg are particularly characterized by their interplay of power, elegance, and fine herbal spice, as well as exceptional longevity.
