OMED – Olive Oil from Andalusia
OMED is olive oil from Andalusia. At the foot of the Sierra Nevada, the Garcia family, under the brand OMED, produces high-quality olive oil in the small southern Spanish town of Ácula, now in its fourth generation. The olive groves are located at an altitude of 700m in a unique, very hilly landscape between the sea and the mountains.
Olive Oil from Andalusia – Picual and Arbequina
Olive oil from Andalusia is mostly produced from two indigenous Spanish olive varieties: Picual and Arbequina. Thus, Picual and Arbequina olive trees are nurtured and cared for on the de Dios family's olive plantation.
Paula and Juande took over the small olive mill in the province of Granada from their father Juan de Dios and modernized the entire production process, from olive harvesting to bottling. For example, an underground drip irrigation system is operated using sustainably generated energy from solar panels. The new oil mill is also an example of sustainable construction. Strategically placed windows provide light to the rooms without heating from direct sunlight, eliminating the need for artificial lighting. Temperature control is achieved through ventilation openings, rainwater is collected in cisterns, and olive pits are burned to generate energy. With all these measures, OMed has significantly reduced its CO2 emissions. To promote flora and fauna on the plantations and achieve a balance between olive grove and ecosystem, OMed works with SeoBirdlife on the Olivares Vivos – Living Olive Groves project. Despite all the tradition that such a family business with a long history brings, OMed is today a young and dynamic company.
OMed's extra virgin olive oils are made from green olives harvested early in October, which are rich in complex aromas. Harvesting is done by hand in the early morning hours, when the sun is low over Andalusia and the heat is still bearable. Since the mill is located in the middle of the olive groves, the olives are processed within a maximum of 3 hours after harvesting and pressed by variety, then allowed to mature in steel tanks protected from oxidation. This enables the production of a particularly good oil – a first-class olive oil.
OMED – numerous awards
OMed olive oils have received multiple high awards. The extra virgin olive oil OMED Picual has received 40 international awards in recent years, and the extra virgin olive oil OMED Arbequina has received almost 20 in recent years. In 2020, the company OMed was honored with the Spanish National Prize for its excellent olive oil.
