Enjoy the Fleur d'Emely Brut from Andres & Mugler

The organic sparkling wine Fleur d'Emely Brut 2024 is arguably the most extraordinary sparkling wine from Andres & Mugler in the Palatinate and, unfortunately, always sells out much too quickly. This fine sparkling wine is characterized by its aromatic grape varieties, Muscat and Sauvignon Blanc, and the terroir from which they originate: the Ruppertsberger Reiterpfad. The name of the vineyard dates back to the Romans, who passed through here with their horses. The vineyard was formed during the Cretaceous period, when the Earth's crust bulged and eventually ruptured, creating the Upper Rhine Plain with sediments such as sand and calcium shells from marine animals in the top layer and lime deposits in the bottom layer. These are precisely what are responsible for the unmistakable acid structure and the lush, yellow fruit aromas of the wines and sparkling wines from the Reiterpfad.

Thus, the popular Fleur d'Emely organic sparkling wine from Andres & Mugler is intensely yellow-fruity and juicy, with an impressive grape fragrance, accompanied by yellow peach, passion fruit, elderflower, and lemon balm. This fine-bubbled organic sparkling wine from Germany is a true insider tip—juicy and fragrant, easy-drinking yet sophisticated, lush in aroma yet possessing a cool, stony minerality, wonderfully dry with a fine, mineral acidity and a long-lasting, lively perlage. The Andres & Mugler Fleur d'Emely Brut organic sparkling wine is produced using traditional bottle fermentation.

The Andres & Mugler sparkling wine estate has three cuvées named after their children: Elena, the daughter of Michael and Uschi, and Louis and Emely, the children of Steffen and Daniela.

Organic sparkling wine – how the Fleur d'Emely Brut is made

The Muscat and Sauvignon Blanc grapes for this Andres & Mugler organic sparkling wine grow on the mineral soils of the Palatinate, specifically in the famous Ruppertsberger Reiterpfad vineyard. Cool winds from the nearby Palatinate Forest ensure a good acid structure in the early-harvested base wines, which is essential for a high-quality sparkling wine.

The quality philosophy of the Andres & Mugler sparkling wine estate begins with careful soil cultivation and consistent cover cropping. The vineyard work, such as pruning, performed by Michael Andres and Steffen Mugler, is pure craftsmanship characterized by a great love for biodynamics. The rhythm of nature significantly dictates their actions. For both, healthy soil, intact flora and fauna, and consequently a vigorous vine are the prerequisites for a healthy circular economy. They harvest all biodynamically cultivated vineyards by hand to ensure the grapes arrive undamaged at the winery in Ruppertsberg.

Here, the Muscat and Sauvignon Blanc are then gently pressed, because the gentler the pressing, the fewer tannins and waxes from the berry skins end up in the must, and the finer and longer-lasting the perlage in the sparkling wine will be. Only about two-thirds of the juice present in the berries is pressed out.

In the cellar, Steffen Mugler and Michael Andres give their sparkling wines time. The grapes are allowed to ferment slowly and rest on the fine lees. The following year, the Fleur d'Emely Brut is bottled and the *tirage* is added to trigger the second fermentation in the bottle. The sparkling wine is then allowed to rest and mature on the fine lees for another year; it is regularly riddled, the bottles are gradually turned upside down and riddled by hand, until finally, the yeast plug is removed by hand during disgorgement, and the Andres & Mugler Fleur d'Emely Brut organic sparkling wine is left to rest in the bottle without the addition of a dosage until, as Steffen emphasizes, "it is ready when it comes out."

Andres & Mugler – the sparkling wine makers

The Andres & Mugler sparkling wine estate in Ruppertsberg was founded in 1989 by the two friends and Palatinate winemakers Michael Andres and Steffen Mugler. In the first few years, base wines were purchased for sparkling wine production, but since 1993, only grapes from their own cultivation have been used. The estate operates biodynamic viticulture on a total of 17 hectares (7 hectares for Michael and 10 hectares for Steffen), growing Riesling and white Burgundy varieties such as Pinot Blanc, Auxerre, and Chardonnay, as well as Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir in the best vineyards of the Palatinate. These grapes are used to produce German sparkling wine in a traditional bottle fermentation process with an unmistakable, elegant style. Sparkling wine from Germany of the highest caliber and in organic quality. In 2019, two of their sparkling wines were rated as "very good" at the Meininger German Sparkling Wine Awards for the first time, and in 2021, they were awarded the title of "Best Sparkling Wine Collection 2021" by Eichelmann's *Germany's Wines*. Quite impressive. The Andres & Mugler sparkling wine estate is a member of *Die Sektmacher*, the association of traditional sparkling wine producers.
