Organic Sekt – Pinot Rosé Brut 2023 – Andres & Mugler

The Organic Sekt Pinot Rosé Brut 2023 offers sparkling pleasure and is a great introduction to the world of fine wines from the Andres & Mugler Sekt manufactory in the Palatinate. This fine-perlage organic sparkling wine from Germany is crafted from organically grown Pinot Noir grapes. It glows in a delicate rose hue and smells of red apple and red berries, such as ripe blackberries, raspberries, and currants; light biscuit notes round off the aroma. On the palate, the organic rosé Sekt shows sparkling lightness, juicy and playful, with an elegant structure. The finely spiced, red-fruited Andres & Mugler Pinot Rosé Sekt is created using traditional bottle fermentation.

The nuanced, elegant Pinot Rosé Brut makes us dream of summer and is an ideal aperitif to welcome your guests. It is also a perfect companion to light appetizers, colorful leaf salads, and fine dishes featuring salmon or green asparagus.

How the Pinot Rosé Brut is made

The Pinot Noir grapes for this Andres & Mugler organic Sekt grow on the mineral soils of the Palatinate, in Ruppertsberg, Deidesheim, and Maikammer. Cool winds from the nearby Palatinate Forest ensure a good acid structure in the early-harvested base wines, which is essential for a high-quality Sekt.

The quality philosophy of the Andres & Mugler Sekt manufactory begins with careful soil cultivation and consistent cover cropping. The vineyard work performed by Michael Andres and Steffen Mugler is pure craftsmanship, shaped by a deep love for biodynamics. The rhythm of nature plays a significant role in their actions. For both of them, healthy soil, intact flora and fauna, and consequently a vigorous vine, are prerequisites for a healthy circular economy. They harvest all biodynamically managed vineyards by hand to ensure the grapes reach the Sekt winery in Ruppertsberg undamaged.

Here, the red grapes are first left on the skins so they can impart their wonderful red color to the must, then gently pressed. Only about two-thirds of the juice present in the berries is extracted.

In the cellar, Steffen Mugler and Michael Andres give their Sekts time. The grapes are allowed to ferment slowly and undergo malolactic fermentation, during which the malic acid in the wine is converted into milder lactic acid, which gives the base wine a special mouthfeel and creaminess.

The following year, the Pinot Rosé is bottled and undergoes the tirage process to trigger the secondary fermentation in the bottle. The dosage was between 3 and 5 g/l. It then rests and matures on the fine lees for another year, being regularly riddled and the bottles inverted more and more until, finally, the yeast plug is removed by hand during disgorgement, and the Andres & Mugler Organic Sekt Pinot Rosé Brut rests in the bottle until "it is good when it comes out," as Steffen emphasizes.

Andres & Mugler – the Sekt makers

The Andres & Mugler Sekt manufactory in Ruppertsberg was founded in 1989 by two friends and Palatinate winemakers, Michael Andres and Steffen Mugler. In the early years, base wines were purchased for sparkling wine production, but since 1993, only grapes from their own vineyards have been used. On a total of 17 hectares (7 ha with Michael and 10 ha with Steffen), the estate practices biodynamic viticulture, growing Riesling and white Burgundy varieties such as Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, and Chardonnay, but also Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir in the best vineyard sites of the Palatinate. These grapes are used to produce German Sekt with a distinctive, elegant style using traditional bottle fermentation—sparkling wine from Germany at the highest level and in organic quality. In 2019, two of their Sekts were rated as very good at the Meininger German Sekt Awards, and in 2021 they received the award from Eichelmann Deutschlands Weine for the best Sekt collection of 2021. Remarkable. The Andres & Mugler Sekt estate is a member of "die Sektmacher," the association of traditional Sekt producers.
