Organic Sekt – Pinot Blanc Brut – Andres Mugler – 2023

The Organic Sekt Pinot Blanc Brut 2023 is an ideal introduction to the world of pleasure offered by the Sekt manufactory Andres & Mugler from the Palatinate. This finely sparkling Pinot Blanc Sekt is smooth and creamy, impressing with a fine pear aroma. It boasts scents of local pear and Mediterranean melon, rounded off by light brioche notes. On the palate, the organic Sekt displays playful lightness, a fine perlage, and an elegant structure. The Andres & Mugler Pinot Blanc Brut Sekt is produced using traditional bottle fermentation.

Organic Sekt – How the Pinot Blanc Brut is Made

The Pinot Blanc grapes for this Andres Mugler Organic Sekt grow on mineral limestone and sandstone weathered soils in the Palatinate. Cool winds from the nearby Palatinate Forest ensure a good acid structure in the early-harvested base wines, which is essential for good Sekt.

The quality philosophy of the Sekt manufactory Andres Mugler begins with careful soil cultivation and consistent greening. The vineyard work of Michael Andres and Steffen Mugler is pure craftsmanship, characterized by a great love for biodynamics. The rhythm of nature significantly influences their actions. For both, healthy soil, intact flora and fauna, and thus a strong vine, are prerequisites for a healthy circular economy. They hand-harvest all biodynamically cultivated vineyards in Ruppertsberg, Deidesheim, and Maikammer to bring the grapes undamaged to the Sekt estate in Ruppertsheim.

Here, the Pinot Blanc grapes are gently pressed, because the gentler the pressing, the fewer tannins and wax from the berry skin enter the must, and the finer and more long-lasting the perlage in the Sekt will be later. Only about two-thirds of the juice present in the berries is pressed.

In the cellar, Steffen Mugler and Michael Andres give their Sekts time. The grapes are allowed to ferment slowly and undergo malolactic fermentation, in which the malic acid in the wine is converted into the milder lactic acid, giving the Sekt base wine a special mouthfeel and creaminess.

The following year, the Pinot Blanc is bottled without filtration or fining and tirage liqueur is added to initiate the second fermentation in the bottle. The dosage is between 3 and 5g/l. It is then allowed to rest and mature on its fine lees for another year. It is regularly riddles, and the bottles are increasingly inverted until, at the end, the yeast plug is removed by hand during disgorgement, and the Andres Mugler Organic Sekt Pinot Blanc Brut rests in the bottle for as long as it takes until "it's good when it comes out," as Steffen emphasizes.

Andres & Mugler – The Sekt Makers

The Sekt manufactory Andres & Mugler in Ruppertsberg was founded in 1989 by two friends and Palatinate winemakers, Michael Andres and Steffen Mugler. In the early years, base wines were purchased and made into Sekt, but since 1993, only grapes from their own cultivation have been processed into Sekt. On a total of 17 hectares (7 hectares for Michael and 10 hectares for Steffen), the Sekt estate practices biodynamic viticulture, growing Riesling and white Burgundy varieties such as Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, and Chardonnay, as well as Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir, in the best vineyards of the Palatinate. From these grapes, German Sekt with an unmistakable, elegant style is produced using traditional bottle fermentation. Sparkling wine from Germany at the highest level and in organic quality. In 2019, two Sekts were rated very good for the first time at the Meininger Deutscher Sektpreis, followed in 2021 by the award from Eichelmann Deutschlands Weine for the best Sekt collection of 2021. Quite impressive. The Andres & Mugler Sekt estate is a member of "die Sektmacher," the association of traditional Sekt producers.
