Weingut J. Neus – Pares Spätburgunder – Großes Gewächs
The 2018 Pares Spätburgunder from Weingut J. Neus is a VDP.Großes Gewächs from the Pares vineyard in Ingelheim am Rhein in the Rheinhessen wine region. This red wine shows great power and minerality. The nose reveals aromas of wild berries, spicy juniper berries, and a fine herbal spice, complemented by toasted notes from the wood. On the palate, there is dark, dense fruit, soft tannins, great complexity, and a long finish, rounding off this top red wine.
The high stone content and old vines of the site ensure wines with great elegance and mineral depth. Spätburgunder from Pares requires many years of maturation to unfold its full beauty.
Pares – The Spätburgunder Vineyard
The name of the VDP.GROßE LAGE Pares is said to derive from the regional term for paradise. A beautiful description for a very special vineyard. The site is located on the Mainzer Berg and extends towards Nieder-Ingelheim am Rhein with a southwest/west orientation. This top site, covering only about 9 hectares and known since the High Middle Ages, is characterized by a loose, loamy soil that acts as a perfect heat reservoir. It is easy for roots to penetrate, ensuring the plants are well supplied with water.
Toni Frank, cellarmaster, and operations manager Lewis Schmitt, who run the winery for Mainz entrepreneur Christian Schmitz, value organic viticulture, which is why the winery is in conversion to organic farming. Healthy soil, green manuring, yield reduction, hand harvesting, and spontaneous fermentation in wooden barrels describe the winemaking process. The Pares matured for 22 months in wood.
