Pinot Gris Ried Gola – from Weingut Wohlmuth
The Wohlmuth Pinot Gris Ried Gola 2019 is a magnificent, dry Pinot Gris from the Gola vineyard in Styria, Austria. Its vines grow on extremely steep vineyard slopes, planted on slate soils. Influenced by the Illyrian climate, which brings warm winds from the Mediterranean and cool winds from the northern Alps to Kitzeck in Southern Styria, and with much manual labor on the steep slopes, which requires admirable local dedication, white wines with an unmistakable, complex fruit expression are produced.
The Pinot Gris Ried Gola from Weingut Wohlmuth is an elegant single-vineyard wine that shows fresh pear fruit on the palate, subtly underscored by fine wood spice, a delicate hint of mango, a touch of meadow herbs, a mineral touch, and a firm acid structure. Powerful and elegant, with fine fruit sweetness and a fresh acid structure, yet tightly knit and persistent, a complex food companion with sure aging potential. This demonstrates the brilliant interplay of grape variety, soil, location, and winemaking craftsmanship, which has a 200-year-old tradition at Wohlmuth.
Pinot Gris – from the Gola vineyard
The site, or as the Austrians say, the Riede Gola, is one of the best historic sites in Southern Styria. The vineyard is located at 400-475m above sea level and is quite steep with a 40-67% incline, and the soils consist of Paleozoic, red slate. The vines are between 6-50 years old. The southeast-facing slope, located on the crest of a ridge, is one of Weingut Wohlmuth's warmest sites, and it imparts enormous substance to Pinot varieties, as well as a unique finesse attributed to the slate minerality. The name Gola comes from Slavic and means "naked" or "barren."
The grapes for this Wohlmuth Pinot Gris Gola are harvested very late through selective hand-picking, a short maceration period of 3-5 hours, very slow and gentle pressing, and spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks (70%) and used large wooden barrels (30%) preserve the fruit and provide structure. The natural vinification and long maturation on fine lees for more than 12 months ensure a full mouthfeel and a delicate creaminess.
With the 2018 vintage, this special site, which produces complex wines of pronounced minerality and elegance, has been classified as Erste STK (Steirische Klassik).
The label of the 2019 vintage features a picture by the Viennese artist Walter Schmögner, who also partly lives in Southern Styria.
