Styrian Panther – White Wine from Wohlmuth Winery
The Styrian Panther 2024 is a dry white wine cuvée, a wine from Gerhard Wohlmuth from Styria in Austria. Wonderfully fruity and light, yet with a cool minerality, this summer wine brings out the best in its grape varieties: Sauvignon Blanc contributes floral fragrance, while Riesling adds structure and a fresh acidic arc. The Styrian Panther is a wonderful accompaniment to light appetizers, vegetable tarts, and summer salads. It also makes for a welcome guest as a well-chilled aperitif.
Wohlmuth – Vinification
The vines for this white wine cuvée grow in absolutely steep vineyard slopes on phyllitic slate soils, reddish and black in color. This slate is thin-layered, partly more compact with inclusions of quartz, sericite, and potassium feldspar. Under the influence of the Illyrian climate, which brings warm winds from the Mediterranean and cool winds from the northern Alps to Kitzeck in Southern Styria, and with much manual labor on the steep slopes, which requires an admirable attachment to home, this dry white wine with a distinctive, complex fruit expression is created.
All grapes are selectively hand-picked. Since the vineyards are located around the winery, long transport routes are not necessary. After a short maceration, gentle pressing takes place, followed by slow, temperature-controlled fermentation at approx. 20 degrees Celsius. To preserve the fragrance and freshness, the wine is aged on the fine lees until bottling at the end of February in stainless steel tanks.
The Wohlmuth Styrian Panther is a classic regional wine from the Southern Styria region and a good introduction to the house's style at an excellent price-pleasure ratio. White blossoms, juicy peach, white tropical fruit on the nose, mineral, animating, and multifaceted on the palate, the Styrian Panther makes you crave a second glass.
