Weedenborn – Sauvignon Blanc Réserve
The Weedenborn Sauvignon Blanc Réserve 2020 is among the best Sauvignon wines from German growing regions. With her Réserve, which was marketed as Sauvignon Blanc Fumé until the 2016 vintage, Gesine Roll impressively demonstrates what can be made from her great love for Sauvignon Blanc. For this, Gesine Roll selects the most beautiful and best grapes from the most valuable sites and oldest Sauvignon Blanc vineyards, the so-called Golden Cut. Spontaneously fermented, she aged it for 18 months on its full lees in classic French oak barriques, which further concentrated it.
Weedenborn – Winemaking
In the style of great Burgundies, the Weedenborn Sauvignon Blanc Réserve is stylishly fine and elegant, with well-integrated wood. On the palate, it shows ample power and richness, as well as a firm structure with tension. Time is the decisive factor not only here. "It's about making the right decision at the right time," Gesine tells us, "both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Not harvesting too early or too late, and intervening as little as possible in the cellar, giving the wine time."
"Gesine Roll has made the wines clearer. They have become cooler, more precise, and even more serious, truly masterful. Sauvignon Blanc is her trademark and her passion. When asked why it was Sauvignon Blanc in particular that captivated her, she gives a typical answer: I love challenges. Producing really good Sauvignon Blanc is not easy. It's about an enormous amount of consistency," describes fellow winemaker and wine blogger Dirk Würtz about the wines from Weingut Weedenborn.
Réserve – aka Fumé
After the Sauvignon Blanc Terra Rossa, which is now undoubtedly one of the best Sauvignon Blancs in Rheinhessen, the Sauvignon Blanc Réserve remains what it has shown in recent years under the name FUMÉ. Gesine Roll's Sauvignon Blanc Réserve comes into the glass with a clear, slightly golden-green color. The nose is dominated by opulent, very elegant aromas of citrus fruits, such as lime and tangerine, warm brioche, and noble smoky notes. On the palate, the Sauvignon Blanc Réserve brings richness to the tongue. This, however, is elegant and underlined with exotic tropical fruits such as papaya, mango, tangerine again, passion fruit, and physalis. This is followed by a mineral concentration that is complex but always elegant and smoky-fruit-driven, shining with finesse and revealing a Burgundian impression on the finish.
