Chardonnay – internationally number 7
Chardonnay is an internationally popular grape variety. In the world ranking of grape varieties, it confidently occupies 7th place. The Chardonnay grape variety has a big advantage, it is flexible or adaptable, or as it is called in the wine world: it shows its terroir. It grows in the north as well as in the south, copes well with hot summers, although less well than with cool, rainy years. It grows on a wide variety of soils, but it likes limestone, such as that found around the Weedenborn winery in Monzernheim. And the white grape variety tolerates aging in wood. Gesine Roll harvests her Chardonnay early enough and allows part of it to mature in used large barrels. This results in a high-quality, cool estate wine with aromas of apples and pears, green walnuts, and a slight smokiness.
