Weedenborn – Sauvignon Blanc – Terra Rossa
The Weedenborn Sauvignon Blanc Terra Rossa 2021 is a local wine from Westhofen in Rheinhessen. The nose offers incredibly captivating aromas of fresh mint, ripe grapefruit, and gooseberries. In the mouth, an incredible mineral complexity immediately emerges, encompassing the entire palate, accompanied by exotic aromas of tropical fruits like ripe mango, papaya, and physalis. Opulent, elegant, and very refined.
Sauvignon Blanc – the Diva in the Vineyard
Sauvignon Blanc grows on the rare red soils in the heart of the Westhofen quarry. The Terra Rossa, as this red weathered soil is called, consists of marine deposits from the Tertiary period and makes up only 1% of Rheinhessen's total vineyard area.
Sauvignon Blanc is a diva in the vineyard and practically demands consistent work from the winemaker in the vineyard and cellar, as it forgives no mistakes. This is precisely what fascinates winemaker Gesine Roll and makes Sauvignon Blanc her favorite grape variety.
After hand-harvesting, the grapes were processed with dry ice to protect the must from oxidation. This is important to us with Sauvignon Blanc, as the typical Sauvignon Blanc aromas (gooseberry, elderflower, grapefruit) are highly volatile when exposed to oxygen – meaning they are quickly lost.
Awards: Winner of the Falstaff Sauvignon Blanc Trophy 2013 with 93 points for the 2012 vintage, making it the best German Sauvignon Blanc. Previously, twice ranked 3rd nationwide. Falstaff also awarded 90 points for the 2015 vintage, commenting: "White currant, slightly reductive, blossoms, blackcurrant, cumin. On the palate with a slight sweetness at the start, quite plump, juicy and well-focused, slightly salty."
