Weingut Weedenborn – Sauvignon Blanc Sekt Brut Nature 2021
The Weedenborn Sauvignon Blanc Sekt Brut Nature 2021 is a brilliant platinum-yellow, fine-mousse sparkling wine made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Fermented using the traditional bottle fermentation method, it spent 24 months on the lees and was riddled by hand before being manually disgorged and corked as Brut Nature, meaning without the addition of any dosage. A sparkling wine from one of Germany's best sparkling wine producers.
Its fruity bouquet, featuring ripe gooseberries, fragrant elderflower, and a hint of tart grapefruit, showcases the typical aromatic Sauvignon Blanc notes. The origin of the grapes lends a chalky minerality to the Sauvignon Blanc Sekt Brut Nature from Weingut Weedenborn. A fantastic sparkling wine with a fresh acidic structure that is well-suited to accompany an entire meal.
Sauvignon Blanc Sekt from Weingut Weedenborn
The grapes for this Weedenborn Sauvignon Blanc Sekt were grown on the limestone marl and loess-loam soils of Rheinhessen. Weingut Weedenborn is located in Monzernheim, a small mountain village not far from the great Westhofen vineyard sites of Kirchspiel and Morstein. This artisanal, family-run winery owns 22 hectares of vines.
Biodiverse cover cropping with special seed mixes of grasses and herbs, as well as the abstention from herbicides, insecticides, and mineral fertilizers, alongside near-natural vine care, low yields, and healthy, fully ripe grapes, are both fundamental requirements and the philosophy of winemaker Gesine Roll.
For the 2021 base wines for the Sauvignon Blanc Sekt, the winemaker pays close attention to the ripeness of the harvested fruit. After being harvested by hand, the grapes were processed with dry ice to protect the must from oxidation. This is important to Gesine Roll of Weingut Weedenborn for her Sauvignon Blanc, as the typical Sauvignon Blanc aromas are highly volatile upon contact with oxygen—meaning they are lost quickly. Once the base wine is produced, all further steps are carried out in collaboration with the Sekthaus Raumland, which is located just about 11 km away. Here, the Sauvignon Blanc base wine undergoes its second alcoholic fermentation via the traditional bottle method to become the Weedenborn Sauvignon Blanc Sekt. It was given 24 months to mature on the lees, developing its flavors and fine effervescence. This is what makes the Sauvignon Blanc Sekt a true delight. Available from the winery as of November 2024.
