Weedenborn Sauvignon Blanc – Estate Wine from Rheinhessen
The Weedenborn Sauvignon Blanc 2024 from Gesine Roll is a wonderful estate wine from the wine-growing village of Monzernheim in Rheinhessen. Its delicate nose offers typical Sauvignon Blanc aromas: gooseberry, elderflower, a hint of grapefruit. Even at this entry level, the limestone-influenced terroir typical of Weedenborn and the vineyards around Westhofen is evident, manifesting as minerality and salinity in the wine. A white wine that pairs wonderfully with fish and poultry.
Weedenborn - The 2024 Vintage
Overall, 2024 was a cooler vintage, challenging with a combination of abundant rainfall and large temperature fluctuations, sometimes in double-digit ranges. The excellent location of the vineyards on a Rheinhessen hilltop, which brought plenty of wind (leading to quicker drying after rain and cooling during heat), was a gift of nature last year. This, combined with a conscientious winemaker like Gesine Roll and a highly motivated team in the vineyards who could react spontaneously to weather changes, shows in the outstanding 2024 vintage: artisanal work is rewarded with high quality.
The grapes from the winery's up to 26 individual parcels were harvested at their individually suitable times and vinified separately. Sauvignon Blanc demands consistent work from the winemaker in the vineyard and cellar, even more so than other grape varieties. After manual harvesting, the grapes were processed with dry ice to protect the must from oxidation. This is important to Gesine Roll from Weingut Weedenborn for Sauvignon Blanc, as the typical Sauvignon Blanc aromas are highly volatile – meaning they quickly dissipate – upon contact with oxygen. The aging took place partly in oak barrels and partly in stainless steel tanks. Only shortly before bottling, the individual batches were skillfully blended to create a wonderfully complex assemblage.
Gesine Roll and her No. 1
Gesine's great love is Sauvignon Blanc. Perhaps she discovered this during her international internship at the South African winery Vergelegen, which she completed during her winemaking apprenticeship. As one of the first, Gesine planted Sauvignon Blanc vines, a grape variety only "permitted" in Rheinhessen since 2001. In 2013, Gesine Roll won the Sauvignon Blanc Trophy with her Sauvignon Blanc Terra Rossa. To this day, one is lucky to get hold of a few bottles of Terra Rossa. For those who prefer something even more sophisticated, try her Sauvignon Reserve, also known as Fumé. A wine with plenty of oak, which benefits from some aging and shows its true grandeur when paired with food.
