The estate wines are the calling card of the winery, which is why drinking pleasure and a fine sense of origin are particularly important to Friedrich Becker here. The grapes come from the winery's own vineyards, which are farmed naturally and meticulously cared for. Estate wines are ideal food companions, and they also benefit from some bottle aging, which particularly suits Burgundy wines.
How Friedrich Becker Wine is Made
The Spätburgunder grapes for this estate wine grow in vineyards around Schweigen in the Palatinate, on both German and Alsatian sides, partly on sandstone weathering soils and partly on limestone soils. The age of the vines ranges from 16 to 43 years. The grapes were carefully selected by hand, destemmed, and fermented separately on the skins according to the vineyard. After two to three weeks of fermentation in open oak vats and tubs, they were gently pressed. Further aging took place for 12 months in large and small French oak barrels. Bottling was done without filtration or fining of the wine.
