Discover the Riesling Laisser Faire from Friedrich Becker
The 2022 Riesling Laisser Faire from the Friedrich Becker winery is an exciting Riesling from Schweigen in the Southern Palatinate. Laisser Faire, which essentially means "let it be," refers to the vinification of this special Riesling: fermented spontaneously with wild vineyard yeasts, winemaker Friedrich Becker leaves it to nature to decide how long the wine ferments and how the winemaking process concludes. It is a slight gamble, as one never knows how much alcohol will be produced or how much residual sugar will remain. As a result, the Riesling Laisser Faire is a semi-dry wine in terms of residual sugar, yet it still leaves a dry impression. Above all, even with some bottle aging, it retains—alongside the classic Riesling notes of yellow stone fruit, such as mirabelle plum, peach, apple, and citrus—this wonderful, slightly wild yeast character, which makes it special to us and a true delight.
Riesling – VDP.GUTSWEIN
The Gutsweine (estate wines) are the calling card of the winery, which is why Friedrich Becker places such importance on drinkability and a refined expression of origin. The grapes come from the estate's own vineyards, which are farmed sustainably and tended to with artisanal care. Gutsweine are ideal food companions, even with some bottle aging, which suits this Riesling very well.
How this Friedrich Becker wine is made
The Riesling grapes for this estate wine come from the best Riesling vineyards around Schweigen, grown on barren limestone soils planted with old vines. These are vineyard plots that naturally yield low crops and grapes of the highest quality.
The grapes are carefully hand-selected, destemmed, and gently pressed after a 30-hour maceration period. The controlled fermentation and subsequent aging take place in 2400-liter oak barrels. After extended fermentation with wild yeasts, ample time on the lees, and very gentle filtration, the wine was bottled in June 2023.
