Friedrich Becker – Spätburgunder 2019 – Estate Wine
The 2019 Spätburgunder from Weingut Friedrich Becker shows a lot of red cherry fruit, pleasant spiciness and fullness, fine tannins and a firm structure, and it is practically fermented through, making it wonderfully dry. The 2019 Spätburgunder matures for 24 months in wood and was bottled unfiltered.
This red wine from the Pfalz is the entry-level Spätburgunder into the Burgundy realm of Friedrich Becker wines. In the glass, it gleams with a pleasant, clear ruby red with dark reflections. On the nose, there are aromas of wild berries, cherry, tobacco, spices and forest floor. On the palate, it is juicy, elegant with good length and structure.

The estate wines are the calling card of the winery, which is why drinking pleasure and a fine sense of origin are particularly important to Friedrich Becker here. The grapes come from the estate's own vineyards, which are farmed close to nature and cultivated by hand. Estate wines are ideal food companions, and they also benefit from some bottle aging, which is particularly suitable for Burgundies.
How Friedrich Becker Wine is Made
The Spätburgunder grapes for this estate wine grow in vineyards around Schweigen in the Pfalz, on both the German and Alsatian sides, on sandstone weathered soils and on limestone soils. The age of the vines ranges from 17 to 44 years. The grapes were carefully hand-selected, destemmed, and fermented separately on the skins, by vineyard. After two to three weeks of fermentation in open oak vats and tubs, they were gently pressed. Further maturation took place for 24 months in large and small French oak barrels. Bottling in December 2022 was done without filtration or fining of the wine.
