Riesling Steinbuckel GG – Knipser VDP.Grosses Gewächs
The Riesling Steinbuckel GG 2021 from Weingut Knipser is a VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS from the Laumersheimer Steinbuckel site in the Pfalz region. The vines for this Große Gewächs are located near Obersülzen in the North Palatinate. There, the climate is somewhat cooler than in Knipser's more southerly sites. As a result, this Riesling exhibits a racy acidity and a cool limestone minerality.
On the nose, the slender, filigreed Riesling reveals a delicate aroma of ripe stone fruit, such as peach and mirabelle plums, complemented by fine, tart citrus notes, blood orange zest, and a beautiful herbaceous spice. On the palate, the fruit of fully ripe yellow fruits continues with a fine melt and an underlying chalky salinity. Long, lingering finish, enormous aging potential. 95 points Vinum Weinguide 2023.
Winemaking – Weingut Knipser
The vines for this Riesling grow in the slightly south-sloping top Palatinate site Steinbuckel. A cool, well-ventilated site that produces predominantly healthy grape material even with very late harvesting. Weingut Knipser cultivates the heart of the site, which is located directly next to the former limestone quarry and has rather barren, limestone-influenced soils.
The selective manual harvest of the Riesling grapes in autumn usually takes place in several passes to ensure optimally ripe grapes. At the winery, all grapes are destemmed, i.e., freed from their stalks. The resulting mash is gently pressed in a tank press. Fermentation takes place partly, temperature-controlled at below 20°C in stainless steel tanks, which preserves the fruitiness and also the varietal character, and partly in large wooden barrels. Aging on the fine lees until bottling in autumn 2022 takes place partly in steel tanks and in traditional wooden barrels of 1,800 liters or in half-barrels of 600 liters.
