Sauvignon Blanc Kapellenweingarten from the Sattlerhof, aged in large wooden barrels

Sauvignon Blanc Kapellenweingarten from the Sattlerhof winery grows in the estate’s highest vineyard and is aged in large wooden barrels. In 2022, it was awarded 97 points and a Platinum Medal—the highest distinction in its category—by the Decanter World Wine Awards.

Sauvignon Blanc Kapellenweingarten is the dry single-vineyard wine from the site cultivated by Andreas Sattler at an altitude of nearly 600 meters above sea level, high above Gamlitz. The vines there are old, and the microclimate is cool and breezy. This allows the grapes to ripen late, imbuing the wine with the spice characteristic of the calcareous quartz and gravel soils.

Ripe pear, lemon zest, and a hint of redcurrant

In the glass, the scent of ripe pear fruit leads, underneath which lies the dry sharpness of freshly grated lemon zest. Right at the back, a redcurrant note emerges, giving the aroma an almost tart edge.

On the palate, the wine is complex and salty at the same time, lifted by a vibrant acidity that never becomes cutting. It lingers in the mouth for a long time. What remains is less about fruit and more about structure—a fine framework of stone and herbs.

The large wooden barrel in which it fermented and subsequently aged did not impart any vanilla, but rather calm and breadth. It will be at its best through 2026, after which the tension will evolve into maturity—a process that suits this vintage well.

Hearty fish, risotto, and wide noodles

The winery itself recommends serving it with hearty fish, such as pan-fried char or zander with brown butter. Risotto and pasta dishes are equally suitable because their creaminess requires exactly what this wine provides in terms of salt and drive.

Vegetables with character also work well, such as oven-baked fennel or roasted asparagus, provided nothing is too sweet. For a festive menu, it is worth comparing it with the 2021 vintage from the same vineyard, which is younger and tighter.

If you are looking for a bottle for a long evening, this single-vineyard wine will carry you through several courses without ever feeling heavy. Its presence remains calm, which is where its authority lies, as it never pushes itself to the forefront in any course.

Large wooden barrels over washed gravel and lime

The Kapellenweingarten vineyard is the family's largest, spanning two basins and curving from south to east and back to south. The slopes rise at a 70 percent incline, which makes every movement up there a serious task.

18 million years ago, rivers washed down pebbles that fused with the lime of past coral reefs to form a conglomerate. Because this soil is heavily leached, the vines must fight for every nutrient, and this struggle gives the wine its core intensity.

The 2018 vintage is organically certified, though not biodynamic, as the winery only took that step starting in 2021. The bottle was awarded 94 points by Falstaff, four stars by Vinaria, and Decanter Platinum. If you would like to get to know the other vineyard sites, you can find them at the Sattlerhof winery; in addition, you will find our white wines and wines from Austria.
