Cool and precise: The Muskateller Eichberg from Weingut Sattlerhof
The Muskateller Eichberg from Weingut Sattlerhof is a fragrant, dry village wine from the family's highest vineyards, grown on barren pebbles far above the valley floor. It smells of lime and lemon verbena, remaining cool and unusually precise.
Muskateller Eichberg is the Südsteiermark DAC village wine from the municipality of Eichberg, where the Sattler family's steep slopes are located at an altitude of 450 to 550 meters. That is about 100 meters higher than around Gamlitz, and you can taste the difference. The vines are between 15 and 30 years old and grow on barren pebble and sandy soils.
Lime, star fruit, and fragrant lemon verbena
The aroma arrives immediately and directly, led by zesty lime followed by the distinctively exotic star fruit. Lemon verbena overlays this—that herb which smells like lemon yet is not—giving the wine its unmistakable opening.
With a bit of aeration, notes of marshmallow leaves emerge, cool and slightly herbaceous, which ground the interplay of aromas. On the palate, the wine remains mineral and lean, carried by an acidity that propels every sip forward. It is thoroughly dry, devoid of the perfumed sweetness often attributed to Muskateller.
The Muskateller of Styria is the Yellow Muskateller, a small-berried variety with plenty of aroma and little weight. This is exactly where its charm lies, as it feels lively without ever becoming intrusive, which is by no means a given for such a highly aromatic variety.
An aperitif and fried vegetables
As an aperitif, this wine plays to its strengths, as its aroma whets the appetite before anything is even on the table. A few olives or a piece of mountain cheese alongside are more than enough; this beginning requires no further effort.
Mild Asian dishes are a second ideal pairing, such as steamed fish with ginger or a vegetable stir-fry. Fried vegetables with a crispy breading find the perfect counterpart in this acidity.
At the family's restaurant, Markus Sattler is at the stove, and wines like this are made for such cuisine. If you are looking for a more robust white to pair with it, you will find it in the Sauvignon Blanc Südsteiermark from the same cellar.
Barren pebbles high above the valley
Eichberg lies higher than the estate's other vineyards, and the nights there are significantly cooler. This cool microclimate is the reason for the straight, clear tone that this wine strikes from the very first second.
The soil yields little—barren pebbles and sand, in some places baked into conglomerate—making it anything but a subsoil for opulence. Such barrenness forces the vine to be thrifty, resulting in small berries with dense skins that carry the aroma in the first place.
The harvest is selective and manual; the must then ferments in steel tanks and matures there as well. Wood is left out of the equation here so that the aroma of the variety does not lose any of its clarity. Everything else from this cellar can be found on the Weingut Sattlerhof page, and the search continues among the white wines.
