Nimmervoll Winery – Eisenhut Roter Veltliner
The Nimmervoll Roter Veltliner Eisenhut 2023 by Gregor Nimmervoll is a dry white wine from the Großriedenthaler Eisenhut vineyard, or as it is called in Austria, the Riede Großriedenthaler Eisenhut, in the Austrian wine-growing region of Wagram. With 13.5% alcohol by volume, it is an elegant, medium-bodied white wine, well-balanced and long-lasting with its 5.7g/l acidity and 6.8g/l sweetness. The Nimmervoll Roter Veltliner pairs well with dark meats with rich sauces, aged cheeses, or a fine snack instead of red wine.
Nimmervoll Wine – from the Eisenhut Riede
The grapes for the Nimmervoll Roter Veltliner Eisenhut grow on red gravel and sandy loess. Harvested late on September 23rd and October 3rd, the fully ripe grapes are first destemmed, then pneumatically pressed after several days of maceration and spontaneously fermented. After slow fermentation, it is aged in stainless steel tanks for some time on the full lees, then on the fine lees until spring, and finally matured in 500l oak barrels until bottling.
The Roter Veltliner Eisenhut shows opulence and aromatic diversity, ranging from candied fruits to marzipan and Turkish delight, and can be stored for decades. It is not without reason that the Großriedenthaler Riede Eisenhut is considered one of the best sites in Wagram, and the Roter Veltliner from Nimmervoll originating from it demonstrates complexity and elegance.
Winemaker Gregor says about the Nimmervoll Roter Veltliner Eisenhut: "The ancestor. An almost lost rarity of the Wagram. A unique piece of radiant beauty, from one of the great Wagram vineyards. Grown on gravel and loess. One of our showpieces full of complex grace and tight structure."
Roter Veltliner – the autochthonous Diva of Wagram
Roter Veltliner is an old, high-yielding white grape variety with high demands on its sites and soils. The grape variety requires early, warm locations with clay or loess soils, as it is quite susceptible to frost and fungal diseases. The thick-skinned berries are greenish-yellow to red in color, which largely depends on sun exposure, and ripen late and very unevenly. Their juice is translucent. Yield reduction is absolutely necessary, as Roter Veltliner is extremely high-yielding and would only produce thin, expressionless wines if left untrimmed. However, if it has an optimal location with perfect soils, as is the case with the Eisenhut from Nimmervoll winery, is cared for in the vineyard, thrives healthily, and is properly pruned for yield, Roter Veltliner produces extract-rich, aromatic wines with good acid structure, enormous development potential, and long aging capacity. A true rarity: only about 145 hectares are planted with this grape variety in Austria, mainly in Wagram, Kamptal, or Kremstal.
