Rausch Riesling Auslese 2018 – Weingut Forstmeister Geltz Zilliken
The Zilliken Rausch Riesling Auslese 2018 is a fruity, sweet, graceful Riesling from the VDP.GROSSE LAGE Saarburger Rausch. The grapes grow on a unique soil formation characterized by Devonian slate and diabase. After 100% manual harvesting, the wine was aged in neutral Fuder barrels. Such an impressive, distinctive complexity of exotic fruit aromas and smoky minerality, accented by fragrant lily and rose notes, can only come from the steep slate slopes of the Rausch. The crystal-clear aromas of the Riesling Auslese appear so pure that each seems to fall individually into your outstretched hand like a ripe fruit from the wine. Purposeful acidity cuts through the richness like the beam of a lighthouse guiding ships safely into their home port on a stormy night in the Atlantic. Considerable maturation time will be rewarded.

The long finish reveals the concentration of the Riesling Auslese. On the palate, it feels weightless. With a moderate alcohol content of 8%, it is an ideal accompaniment to game or foie gras terrines. When aged, the Riesling Auslese pairs well with spicy Asian dishes or sweet desserts without too much acidity. And, of course, with aged cheeses, from cow, goat, or sheep. Even though it is captivating when young, it only truly shows its full potential after 10-20 years of bottle aging. Try it out; we also have aged Rieslings from Weingut Forstmeister Geltz Zilliken in stock. Or you can practice patience, as the future of Zilliken Riesling Auslese looks rosy.
Incidentally, our cellar is cooled in summer and heated in winter by a geothermal heat pump powered by a photovoltaic system, so that the wine can mature optimally.
The 2018 vintage on the Saar
2018 was a summer of the century in Germany with countless hours of sunshine. A sunny summer without great heat, which caused no drought stress for the vines, which had enjoyed abundant rain in May. Due to the consistently sunny weather, the harvest began unusually early, on September 24th. "Seldom were the vineyards full of such golden grapes," Dorothee Zilliken tells us. The fantastic autumn enabled the single berry selection for noble sweet Rieslings, like this Riesling Auslese. The dry Rieslings from 2018 are juicy, mineral, and approachable – tropical aromas paired with classic Saar elegance.
