Discover the Rausch Riesling Kabinett – Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken
The 2023 Zilliken Rausch Riesling Kabinett is a fruit-sweet Riesling from the VDP. Grosse Lage vineyard of Saarburger Rausch. This delicately fruity, juicy, and enlivening Saar Riesling from the Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken estate, crafted in the 2023 vintage—an outstanding year for Kabinett Rieslings—is defined by a lively interplay between fruit and acidity. Delicate aromas of tropical and orchard fruits, white peach, and ripe Williams pear meet grapefruit, mango, and apricot, all carried by an elegant layer of slate smoke. Juicy on the palate, with vibrant acidity and a subtle herbaceous thread. Yet, do not be deceived: the full power of the Rausch site reveals itself in the composed richness, deep minerality, and persistent nature of this single-vineyard Riesling.
Zilliken Rausch Kabinett 2023 – a wine and its specifications
- 8.0% alcohol
- 58 g/l residual sugar
- 6.6 g/l acidity
With a moderate alcohol content of 8.0%, it is an ideal companion for light dishes featuring chicken or fish, sushi, scallops, or spicy Asian cuisine. Although it is delightful while young, it only reveals its full potential after 5–10 years of bottle aging. If needed, matured Rieslings from the Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken estate can save you the wait.
By the way, our cellar is cooled in summer and warmed in winter by a geothermal heat pump powered by a photovoltaic system, ensuring the wine can mature under optimal conditions.
The Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken Rausch Riesling Kabinett 2011 was awarded 92 points by Gault&Millau, and the 2017 vintage received 93 points, each being named the best Kabinett of the year!
2023 – the wine year on the Saar
A mild spring awoke the vines early from their winter dormancy. Dry weather conditions provided ideal prerequisites for a smooth flowering period. In July and August, long-awaited rains provided the necessary water supply for the vines, allowing them to thrive vigorously. We began our selective hand-harvesting as early as September 25, 2023—unusually early.
Thanks to this laborious manual work, only the best grapes from our steep slopes reached the winery for pressing. The weather cooperated during the harvest as well: cool nights and moderate daytime temperatures ensured that the grapes could retain their fresh acidity.
We were able to conclude the harvest on October 18—just in time, before the persistent rain set in.
