Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken – Saarburg Riesling – VDP.Ortswein from 2022
The Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken Saarburg Riesling 2022 is an elegant VDP.Ortswein from the Saar region, which in previous years was vinified as Kabinett trocken. The grapes grow on older vines in the vineyards around Saarburg, such as Saarburger Rausch, on a unique soil formation characterized by Devonian slate and diabase. Diabase is a basalt-flint that produces its very own, unmistakable minerality.
After 100% selective hand-picking of their own grapes, gentle pressing and spontaneous fermentation of the VDP.Gutswein takes place in the old cellar below the new vinotheque, with aging in neutral fuder barrels. The Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken Saarburg Riesling is clear, juicy with aromas of green Cox Orange apple, peach and lime, complemented by herbaceous chamomile and bitter notes of green tea, with stony-salty minerality, Saar acidity and dancing lightness.
"Delicious, vibrant and persistent," is how winemaker Dorothee Zilliken describes the Saarburg Riesling 2022. The delicate nature of this magnificent Saar Riesling begins charmingly floral. The slender, stony palate is reduced to the essentials, almost transparent in its clarity.
The Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken Saarburg Riesling trocken pairs well with raw asparagus, green peas, feta, fried fish, as well as aromatic wild herb salad. There are few dishes that would not benefit from this dry accompaniment.
