Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken – Dry Riesling from the Saar
The 2021 Zilliken Riesling dry is an elegant Riesling from the Saar, produced by the VDP estate Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken. The grapes grow on a soil formation characterized by Devonian slate and diabase. Diabase is a basalt-flint that imparts a very unique, unmistakable minerality. Following 100% selective hand-harvesting of their own grapes, the fruit undergoes gentle pressing and spontaneous fermentation in the old cellar beneath the new vinotheque, with aging taking place in neutral Fuder barrels. The Zilliken Riesling dry is clear and juicy, with aromas of green apple, yellow peach, and a touch of waxy pear peel, featuring typical Saar acidity and a dancing lightness.
"Riesling. Dry. Saar. In a year like 2021, that really says it all. The graceful apricot and nectarine nose is interwoven with fine herbs and thinly coated with apple jelly. Fresh citrus aromas on the palate are balanced by a wonderful fruitiness, and together with the truly delicious finish, this makes this estate wine an irresistible summer charmer," says winemaker Dorothee Zilliken, speaking enthusiastically about her wine.
The Zilliken Riesling dry pairs just as well with cream cheese and fried fish as it does with a vibrant tomato salad. There are few dishes that would not benefit from this delightful companion.
