Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken – Dry Riesling from the Saar
The 2022 Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken Riesling trocken is an elegant Riesling from the Saar, produced by the VDP estate Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken. The grapes are grown in the Saarburger Rausch, Ayler Kupp, and Niedermenniger Herrenberg vineyards on soil formations characterized by Devonian slate and diabase. Diabase is a basalt-flint stone that imparts a unique, unmistakable minerality.
Following a 100% selective hand-harvest of their own grapes, the VDP estate wine undergoes gentle pressing and spontaneous fermentation in the old cellar beneath the new vinotheque, with aging taking place in neutral Fuder casks. The Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken Riesling trocken is clear and juicy, with aromas of green apple, yellow peach, a hint of waxy pear skin, and fragrant fruit blossoms, finished with typical Saar acidity and a dancing lightness.
"Riesling. Dry. Saar." In a year like 2022, that says it all. "The graceful nose of apricot and nectarine is laced with fine herbs and thinly coated with apple jelly. Fresh citrus aromas are met on the palate by a wonderful fruitiness, and together with the truly delicious finish, this makes this estate wine an irresistible summer charmer," winemaker Dorothee Zilliken tells us enthusiastically about her wine.
The Zilliken Riesling trocken pairs just as well with cream cheese and fried fish as it does with a vibrant tomato salad. There are very few dishes that would not benefit from this delightful companion.
