Tuna in olive oil, tender fillets from Portugal

Porthos tuna in olive oil consists of tender fillets of Portuguese tuna in fine olive oil, known in Portuguese as "Atum em Azeite." Not dry canned fish, but succulent pieces resting in quality oil.

Tuna in olive oil is the classic way to preserve good tuna: tender fillets of Portuguese tuna, processed by hand and preserved in fine olive oil with a light touch of salt. Aromatic, succulent, and firm to the bite. The tin is labeled "Atum em Azeite" – tuna just the way the south likes it.

Succulent, tender, and aromatic

The olive oil makes the difference: it keeps the tuna succulent and adds a mild, well-rounded note that the fish does not have in its own juice.

The fillets remain in beautiful pieces—firm yet tender—and absorb the aroma of the oil. The better the oil, the finer the fish tastes in the end; at Porthos, both are perfectly matched. A spoonful of the oil should also go onto the bread, as it is packed with flavor. This way, you taste the fish and a hint of olive oil in every bite—Mediterranean cuisine in its simplest form.

For those looking for the difference compared to tuna in its own juice: the oil makes it rounder, fuller, and a bit more festive. Both have their place, but the one in olive oil is the gourmet choice of the two.

Pure on bread, with lemon and pepper

Served simply on a slice of bread with a little lemon and cracked pepper, the tuna in olive oil shows what it’s made of—it’s hard to make a good lunch any faster. Add a hard-boiled egg and a few capers, and the plate is complete.

It fits in any salad, pasta, pizza, or sandwich, and also works well in a quiche. Its fine oil gives every dish a Mediterranean tone. If you prefer your fish completely pure, choose the tuna in its own juice; if you like it spicy, go for the tuna in spicy olive oil. Further tinned fish can be found in our shop.

Even cold from the tin, straight with a fork, it is a little treat for in between meals. In Portugal, a good tin of tuna belongs in every pantry: quick, good, and patient, waiting for when hunger strikes.

Porthos, a musketeer from Matosinhos

Porthos is based in Matosinhos, the port city near Porto, where the cannery Conservas Portugal Norte has been putting Atlantic fish into tins by hand for over 100 years. Its roots date back to 1912.

The brand is named after the musketeer Porthos from Alexandre Dumas' 1844 novel, the strongest of the three friends, as Dumas described him. Since the 1950s, the stately musketeer has appeared on every tin, and the artfully lithographed metal tins are among the most beautiful that Portugal has to offer.

Over the years, new recipes have been added, but the musketeer on the tin has remained. Good tuna in really good oil, from the Atlantic coast straight to your table. You can find the entire selection in our Porthos assortment. A classic that is great to have in the house, for quick hunger and for guests alike.
