Tuna in tomato sauce, fruity from Portugal

Porthos tuna in tomato sauce is tender Portuguese tuna in a fruity tomato sauce, known as Atum em Tomate in Portuguese. This is not dry canned fish, but succulent fillets in sun-ripened tomato.

Tuna in tomato sauce is the fruity way to enjoy tuna: tender fillets of Portuguese tuna, processed by hand, preserved in ripe tomatoes and mild sunflower oil, and lightly salted. Aromatic, fruity, and firm to the bite. The can is labeled Atum em Tomate – fish and tomato, a classic, perfect pairing.

Succulent, fruity, and aromatic

The tomato sauce is well-rounded and slightly sweet, while the tuna underneath remains firm and succulent. Fish and tomato complement each other without one overpowering the other, like a well-matched pair that has known each other for a long time.

The riper the tomato, the fuller the flavor of the sauce, and the better it carries the fish. The fillets remain in beautiful pieces, so you can lift them out of the can in one piece. A spoonful of the sauce belongs on your bread, too, as it is packed with sunshine.

The mild sauce makes the tuna perfect for everyday meals: it provides fruitiness and acidity, meaning you often don't need to add any seasoning at all. If you like it punchier, add capers, olives, or a few chili flakes. This is Portuguese comfort food: simple and honest.

An all-rounder from bread to pasta

Served directly on a slice of bread with a little onion and pepper, the tuna in tomato sauce needs no side dish – a quick meal that tastes of the South. A splash of olive oil on top never hurts.

It works wonderfully in pasta, rice, on pizza, or in a casserole, where the tomato already provides the sauce. It also makes for a quick lunch served cold from the can with bread and a green salad. If you prefer your fish plain, reach for the tuna in olive oil; if you want something very light, choose the tuna in its own juice. You can find more tinned fish in our collection.

As a staple, it belongs in every pantry: one can, a plate of pasta, and you're done with a meal that is filling and delicious. The mild, fruity sauce is also often a hit with children.

Porthos, a musketeer from Matosinhos

Porthos is based in Matosinhos, the port city near Porto, where the Conservas Portugal Norte cannery has been packing Atlantic fish by hand for over 100 years. Its roots go back to 1912, and Matosinhos is where the Atlantic Ocean meets over a century of craftsmanship.

The brand is named after Porthos the musketeer from Alexandre Dumas' 1844 novel, the strongest of the three friends, as Dumas described him. The stately musketeer has adorned every can since the 1950s, and these artistically lithographed tins are among the most beautiful that Portugal has to offer.

Whether sardine or tuna – every Porthos can contains a piece of the Atlantic and over a hundred years of experience. You can find the entire selection in our Porthos assortment. Fish and tomato – it can be that simple to be good. A reliable classic for busy days and for filling your plate in the evening.
