Due Palme Serre Susumaniello – Salentino IGP Wine from Puglia

The Due Palme Serre Susumaniello 2022 is a velvety, full-bodied red wine made from the indigenous Susumaniello grape variety. On the nose, this dense, inky-blue wine reveals a complex bouquet with notes of dark berries, such as midnight-black blackberries, freshly picked plums, some raspberry jelly, along with hints of graphite and a touch of pepper, as well as fine toast aromas from the wood. Truly a charmer, it is not for nothing one of our customers' favorite wines.

Its well-structured body is powerful and warm, robust and spicy. On the palate, it displays strength, silkiness, and harmony, with soft tannins and perfectly integrated acidity leading to a long-lasting finish. The Serre is a wine with a great structure and a good balance between ripe fruit and vibrant minerality. A complex red wine with good drinkability that pairs equally well with dark, boiled meat as it does with braised vegetables, a slice of pizza, an antipasti platter, or a bag of potato chips.

Due Palme – the Susumaniello Salentino IGP

Angelo Maci, president of Cantine Due Palme, was one of the first to take on Puglia's forgotten grape variety and re-cultivate it. He recognized the enormous potential of this indigenous grape variety, which presumably arrived in Puglia from Dalmatia and was only found in isolated pockets around Brindisi, and he produces his single-varietal Susumaniello from it, which he calls Serre.

The name is derived from the grape variety's yield capacity, "packed like a donkey," it produces large quantities of grapes in its youth if the yield is not reduced. After about ten years, the yield decreases significantly, but the exceptional quality of the grapes rewards the winemaker. Susumaniello is a red wine grape variety that fits perfectly with the hot Puglian sun, as it maintains a good acid structure despite high sugar content in the ripe grapes.

The Serre from Cantine Due Palme is made from selected Susumaniello grapes, which are harvested by hand in September. The perfectly ripe grapes first ferment in special stainless steel tanks, in horizontal rotating tanks, where color and aromatic substances can be particularly well released into the must. The wine then matures for six months in French oak barrels and several months in the bottle before being released for sale.
