Ekelund Luciamorgon Placemat for the Swedish St. Lucy's Morning
The Ekelund Luciamorgon placemat is a woven placemat made of organic cotton, measuring 35 by 48 centimeters, woven at the Ekelund factory in Horred, Sweden. It features a classic Lucia procession with Lucia, her attendants, and the star boys in delicate winter colors. A placemat made of organic cotton, the art of weaving from a family-run business that has been operating in the same location since 1692.
The Ekelund Luciamorgon placemat 35 x 48 cm brings the Swedish St. Lucy's Day celebration of December 13th to your Advent table and is woven at the Ekelund factory in Sweden from 100 percent organic cotton. Betty Svensson designed the Luciamorgon motif for Ekelund Linneväveri. A wintry placemat that brings light, warmth, and a piece of Scandinavian tradition to the table during the dark time of year.
Lucia, the attendants, and the star boys
The motif depicts the typical Swedish Lucia procession: Lucia in the lead, wearing a long white dress, a red ribbon around her waist, and a crown of candles on her head. Her attendants accompany her with glitter in their hair, while the star boys wear white robes, pointed paper hats, and carry wands with stars. A scene that takes place countless times every December in Sweden—parading through school hallways, hospitals, and living rooms—usually accompanied by the song "Sankta Lucia, ljusklara hägring," which, once heard, is never forgotten.
The colors are kept in delicate winter white, bright candle yellow, and a warm, festive red. She designs her motifs using watercolor and gouache, as Betty Svensson explains regarding her work for Ekelund, before they are transferred to the loom using the patented Rainbow method. Eight colored threads ultimately create different color combinations on the front and back, giving the placemat a slight shimmer and depth.

Practical, durable, and festive all in one
Robust, absorbent, and suitable for everyday use, the Luciamorgon placemat sits on the table and survives machine washing at 60 degrees without needing a delicate cycle. No microplastics, unlike many synthetic placemats, but pure organic cotton. If you iron it, do so on the reverse side at medium heat, and it will lie flat under plates and cups.
Its time is from the first Sunday of Advent until Epiphany, combined with white dinnerware and a red candle in the center. It suits breakfast with Lussekatter, the saffron-yellow Lucia buns, as well as afternoon coffee with gingerbread cookies and a festive dinner by candlelight. Several placed side-by-side on a long table create a small Lucia procession across the room. The art of weaving from Horred since 1692
Ekelund Linneväveri is Sweden's oldest documented textile mill, founded in 1692 in Horred, a village between Gothenburg and the Swedish west coast. More than 330 years of history, eight generations, a single location. Here, spinning, dyeing, weaving, and packaging take place—a value chain that is rarely found in such completeness. For many years, the company has collaborated on designs with Betty Svensson, who studied at the School of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg.
What makes it special is the patented Rainbow method, in which eight colored threads are woven in such a way that the motif appears in different color combinations on the reverse side. A placemat that brings you double the joy. All fabrics are made of 100 percent organic cotton and organic linen and are certified according to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).
