Questions about Smoked Sea Salt – smoked sea salt flakes?

We are happy to help you with Maldon Salt.

Smoked Sea Salt, Maldon's Pyramids in Oak Smoke

Maldon Smoked Sea Salt is the famous pyramid-shaped sea salt flake from Essex, gently smoked over English oak. A smoked salt with a subtle, warm note – golden brown, crunchy, in a 125-gram box.

Maldon Smoked Sea Salt is a smoked salt made from the original Maldon pyramids: first, the Osbornes boil their sea salt flakes just as they have since 1882, then the crystals are infused with the cold smoke of English oak until they shimmer golden brown. The flake remains crunchy, the smoke remains polite – very British, even in tone.

Subtly smoky, never overpowering

There is warm oak smoke on the nose; on the palate, the pyramid crunches first, followed by a round, slightly sweet smoky note that underscores the dish rather than overpowering it. It is precisely this restraint that distinguishes Maldon's smoked salt from bolder varieties – it seasons with the handbrake on.

The oak sets the characteristically British tone: drier and more tart than birch, warmer than beech, with a hint of whisky barrel. If you want to taste both schools, place the English and the Icelandic smoked salt side by side – a small tasting with a great lesson.

The color is a feast for the eyes: golden-brown to amber-colored flakes that glow like little sparks on light-colored food. Smoky, crunchy, warm – a flake like a late summer evening by the fire.

On mussels, feta, and fried eggs

The classic pairing is pan-seared meat, but Smoked Sea Salt has its finest performances elsewhere: on steamed mussels, fried fish, over feta with olive oil, or simply on a fried egg, which then tastes like breakfast by a campfire.

Vegetarian cuisine also loves to use it – roasted vegetables, lentil dishes, avocado toast, and tomato soup gain smoky depth with a pinch, all without a grill. Crumble between your fingers only after cooking to retain the crunch.

A trick from our kitchen: knead a few crumbled flakes into soft butter and let it melt over hot corn on the cob or steak – this smoked butter is made in two minutes and tastes like much more effort. You can find more smoked relatives in our smoked salt category.

First boiled like in 1882, then into the oak smoke

The base is the original: seawater from spring tides in the Blackwater Estuary, boiled in shallow pans, harvested by hand – the Osborne family has been working like this in Maldon since 1882, now in the fourth generation under Steve Osborne. For the smoked version, the finished flakes are then moved into the smoke of English oak.

The smoking process is gentle and slow so that the delicate pyramids retain their shape and crunch, absorbing only color and aroma. The longer the smoke is drawn, the deeper the tone – the Osbornes take the time that over 140 years of craftsmanship simply demand.

The fact that a company with a Royal Warrant – Maldon has been an official supplier to the British Royal Household since 2012 – ventures into smoked salt says a lot about their standards: the smoked version must be equal to the world-famous original, otherwise it wouldn't exist.

The 125-gram box belongs in every kitchen that loves roasted aromas but doesn't own a smoker. You can find the unsmoked original in the classic box, the Icelandic birch colleague from Saltverk – and everything from the manufacturer at Maldon Salt. Oak meets pyramid: That’s what smoke sounds like in English.

Maldon Seasalt
