Questions about Sea Salt – Sea Salt Flakes – 125g?

We are happy to help you with Maldon Salt.

Maldon Sea Salt, the original among sea salt flakes

Maldon Sea Salt flakes are the famous pyramid-shaped salt crystals from the English county of Essex – harvested by hand and boiled by the Osborne family since 1882. The 125-gram box is the classic for kitchen and table.

Many chefs consider Maldon Sea Salt sea salt flakes the standard by which all salt flakes are measured: paper-thin, hollow pyramids from the Blackwater estuary in Essex, boiled by the Osborne family – since 1882, now in the fourth generation. When people say "salt flakes," they often mean this exact box.

Crispy, clear and with sweet precision

Between your fingers, the pyramids break with a bright crunch; on the tongue, they dissolve slowly and cleanly – salty without sharpness, mineral without bitterness. This precision has made the flake famous: it seasons with pinpoint accuracy, not over a broad surface.

The shape is not just decorative, but the reason for the taste. The thin crystal walls melt faster than compact grains, release their seasoning in layers, and can be dosed by feel – with your fingers, never with a grinder.

Then there is the visual appeal: on dark braised meat or a slice of tomato, the pyramids glisten like frost. Maldon doesn't just salt, it decorates as it goes – and it is exactly this dual role that has turned the flake from a professional secret into a kitchen classic.

The finishing salt for everything that is already prepared

Maldon is a finishing salt through and through: it is only added to the dish once the pan and oven have done their work. A few flakes over a seared steak, a soft-boiled egg, tomatoes with olive oil, or freshly sliced sourdough bread with butter – great flavor doesn't need more effort.

The sweet kitchen also loves this English staple: on caramel, chocolate cookies, and brownies, the sea salt flakes provide sparkling, crunchy accents – salt awakens sweet, it always works. Sprinkle them on avocado toast and grilled corn – anywhere where texture makes the difference. You can find more crunchy relatives in our salt flakes category.

Since 1882 at the mouth of the Blackwater

In the small town of Maldon in Essex, the Osborne family has been boiling salt since 1882 – since 2003, Steve Osborne has been running the house in the fourth generation, after his great-grandfather James, grandfather Cyril, and father Clive. The seawater is collected during spring tides around the full and new moon, when its salinity is at its highest; it is then filtered and slowly heated in shallow pans until the typical pyramids grow on the surface.

Harvesting is done by hand with long rakes, using techniques passed down for over 140 years – the gentler the boiling, the finer the flake. Since 2012, the company has held the Royal Warrant, officially supplying the British royal household. Tradition, craftsmanship, and a royal seal: hats off.

The 125-gram box with the green lettering is kept within easy reach of the stove in professional kitchens all over the world – and looks just as good at home. If you want to taste the smoked version, reach for the Smoked Sea Salt, smoked over oak wood. You can read the entire history of the manufactory at Maldon Salt – and see the Icelandic alternative at Saltverk. England has been salting since 1882 – and it tastes exactly that way.
