2024 Vintage Sardines, the young catch from Brittany

The 2024 vintage sardines from Les Mouettes d'Arvor are the fresh vintage from Concarneau, laid by hand in olive oil. A "millésime" at the beginning of its journey – already delicate, and becoming rounder with every year of cellaring.

Vintage sardines bear the year of their catch on the tin – sardines from a single season, fished off the Breton coast and processed into a limited edition at the Conserverie Gonidec. The 2024 vintage arrives on the shelf young and clear, caught at the end of the season when the sardine is at its most plump. A small treasure to enjoy immediately or put away. You will find the year on the tin – a fine tradition at Les Mouettes d'Arvor since 1996.

Young, clear, with a bite

Fresh from the tin, the 2024 vintage tastes bright and clearly of the sea, with firm flesh and a clean, salty finish. The olive oil sits lightly on top, carrying the flavor without masking it.

It still carries the freshness of youth; the extra virgin olive oil has only just begun to embrace it. The longer you let it sit, the softer and deeper it becomes – those who wish can try the same sardine again in a year or two and taste the difference. A young vintage like this shows the sardine as it comes from the sea – clear, straightforward, without frills.

Fresh on a baguette, with a glass of white wine

The young vintage is best enjoyed simply – on a crusty baguette, with a squeeze of lemon.

A cool, dry white wine like a Sancerre keeps its freshness awake, accompanied by radishes, young onions, and coarse pepper. It works wonderfully in a Salade Niçoise, and on toasted bread with sea salt, it is excellent. Even cold from the tin, with fleur de sel and a drop of lemon oil, it makes for a fine start to a meal. Further vintage sardines and sardines from France are right next door.

With the Gonidec family in Concarneau since 1959

Behind the brand is the Conserverie Gonidec in Concarneau, in family hands since 1959 and today run by Valérie and Jacques Gonidec. Since 1996, the house has treated every catch as a distinct vintage – an idea otherwise more commonly known from wine. As soon as the catch arrives at the harbor, a bath of ice water firms up the flesh.

The fish comes fresh from the port, is cleaned by hand, fried in olive oil, and packed tin by tin – around forty pairs of hands are involved. Back in 1990, the sardines in olive oil were awarded the Gault & Millau prize, and Gonidec remains the last cannery in Concarneau today.

Les Mouettes d'Arvor owes its name to the football team of Jacques II; the tins depict scenes from the life of Breton fishermen. Little works of art that one almost finds too beautiful to open.

The beginning of your own vintage collection

You can enjoy the fresh vintage immediately – or put it away and start your own small vintage collection. Stored in a cool, dark place, the 2024 will soften from year to year; turn the tin occasionally so that the olive oil surrounds the fish completely. Chill briefly before serving, then open at room temperature. At Les Mouettes d'Arvor, you will also find other tinned fish from Brittany.
