Sardines in extra spicy olive oil with plenty of piri-piri

Nuri sardines in extra spicy olive oil are whole Portuguese sardines, generously spiced with piri-piri. The fieriest tin in the Nuri range – for anyone who finds standard heat far too tame.

Sardines in extra spicy olive oil are whole sardines from the traditional Nuri cannery in Matosinhos, placed in olive oil with an extra portion of piri-piri. First you taste the tender, buttery fish, then the heat arrives and lingers for a while. If you love spice, you’ve finally found your tin – a fish with fire, straight from Portugal, and no half measures.

For those who like it really hot

With Nuri, "extra spicy" is no empty claim – there is noticeably more piri-piri in this oil than in the regular spicy version. A tin for brave tongues who like it tender, fiery, and honest.

Piri-piri is the small, fiery chili of Portugal, and in this tin, it really kicks things up a notch. Even so, the fish doesn't disappear behind the heat: first you taste the tender, buttery sardine, then the heat builds up—warm, spicy, and long-lasting. Hot, savory, Mediterranean – a tin for everyone who likes chili not as decoration, but as the main event.

How to tame the heat at the table

These extra spicy sardines need a partner to cushion the heat and round out the enjoyment – otherwise, the pleasure quickly becomes a test of courage.

A thick dollop of cream cheese or quark on hearty bread balances them out, accompanied by a cold beer or a glass of white wine. When cooked into pasta with plenty of garlic and parsley, they meld into a fiery sauce; served over rice with a cool yogurt dip, the heat becomes pleasantly mellow. If you prefer things a touch milder, reach for the standard spicy sardines or the classic sardines in olive oil from our Portuguese canned fish range.

Whole sardines, by hand from Matosinhos

Nuri belongs to Conservas Pinhais, founded in 1920 in the fishing port of Matosinhos – to this day, every sardine is placed into the tin by hand.

A single tin of Nuri requires 37 steps, and almost all of them are performed by human hands. Experienced women clean, head, and pack the sardines individually before the oil and generous amounts of piri-piri are added. The Nuri brand has existed since 1935, and since 2016, Austrian Jakob Glatz has been leading the traditional company. Nuri is the only cannery in Portugal that still processes its fish entirely as it did over a hundred years ago. So much care, even for the spiciest tin. Respect.

A few drops elevate any soup

Almost the best part of the tin is the fiery oil – a few drops of it elevate soups, a tomato sauce, or roasted vegetables.

Unopened, the sardines last for years and actually become more rounded in flavor over time. Once opened, store them covered in the refrigerator; they will taste even spicier the next day. Keep a small supply in the pantry, and when the craving for real heat strikes, Portugal is only a lid away. You can find more from the Nuri range with us, from mild sardines to gift sets.
