"Mistletoe" chocolate box by Sawade as a small advent tin
The 45 g "Mistletoe" chocolate box by Sawade is a red, round tin containing four chocolates, with each variety included exactly once. Brittle, pistachio, marzipan, and a whipped truffle rest on a golden cardboard base, and golden branches with white berries entwine over the lid.
The 45 g "Mistletoe" chocolate box is Sawade's smallest advent tin from Berlin-Reinickendorf: four pieces totaling 45 grams beneath a deep red lid. None of the chocolates contain alcohol, so the tin can be handed over across the table and into the hands of others without a second thought.
Palm-sized and brimming with winter
The tin fits in the palm of a hand, and the red lid with its golden vine pattern makes wrapping paper practically redundant. The lid is usually taken off right in the doorway, long before the coat is even on the hook. Red and gold are all the packaging needed here.
Underneath, each chocolate reveals its own surface: a light square carries amber-colored brittle shards, a whole pistachio sits atop a dark dome, a pale piece of marzipan ripples under its coating, and the dark truffle next to it is marked with a spiral.
On the palate, they diverge even further than a tin of this size would suggest. The brittle crunches briefly with a salty-sweet taste, the pistachio remains firm, the marzipan becomes soft and moist, and the truffle yields immediately. Crunching, yielding, melting—four pieces and three temperaments.
The truffle is whipped, not stirred
At the very end of the ingredient list is a word rarely seen: nitrogen for whipping. The gas is whipped into the warm truffle mixture, making it airy before it sets. Butter and almond appear early in the ingredient sequence, and both need this air to prevent the mixture from feeling cloying.
This is why the truffle sits lightly on the tongue, even though it contains butter and cream and, according to the ingredients, should technically be heavy. The finer the bubbles, the faster the mixture melts, and the less the sweetness stands in the way.
The spiral on top is applied by hand using a piping bag, individually and without a template. It looks a little different on every dome for this reason, and those who look closely will find that no two Sawade chocolates have the exact same line.
When the tin is empty, it begins anew
Four fine pieces convey the same message as a large box, without putting the recipient under any pressure. After all, the chocolates at Sawade do not get smaller—only the lid covering them does—and that is exactly what distinguishes this tin from many other palm-sized gifts.
Once empty, a round container with a vine pattern remains, which will keep sewing needles, stamps, and cufflinks well-stored for years to come. Incidentally, the branch with white berries was traditionally not a place for negotiation, but for reconciliation and kissing.
The small tin pairs well with advent coffee, hot chocolate, and a plate of cinnamon stars. Between fifteen and eighteen degrees, in a dark and dry place, the coating remains glossy, while heating air causes it to turn gray and the refrigerator causes condensation to form on it.
The motif is larger in the 120 g "Mistletoe" chocolate box and more festive in the large bonbonniere. The entire assortment from Wittestraße can be found at Sawade Berlin, along with our Christmas selection.
