Awesome Steak Sauce with a fine jalapeño kick
The Awesome Steak Sauce by The Original Australian is a bold steak sauce based on Australian grilling traditions, crafted from ripe tomatoes, jalapeños, and a raisin paste. Full-bodied, savory, and with a mild heat – made for steak and everything else that comes off the grill.
Awesome Steak Sauce is the full-bodied steak sauce from the line of barbecue sauces by The Original Australian, the brand created by Australian chef Garry Sullivan. Built on a base of ripe tomato purée, it brings together jalapeños, fresh ginger, and brown cane sugar, along with a raisin paste for a dark, subtle sweetness. A sauce for robust flavors and big barbecue nights, made from select ingredients rather than artificial additives.
Tomato, jalapeño, and sweet raisin
Bold, pleasantly spicy, with a sweetness that comes from raisins rather than pure sugar – that is how this steak sauce tastes.
On the palate, ripe tomato takes the lead, followed by the mild heat of the jalapeños, and finally, the raisin paste settles in like a warm closing chord. Fresh ginger keeps the flavor profile bright and lively, ensuring the sauce never feels heavy despite its richness.
It remains thick enough to cling to a steak, yet balanced enough to be enjoyed straight off the spoon. This is not a sauce that tries too hard. It’s a steak sauce with depth that doesn't hide behind the meat, but confidently stands up to it.
For steak, burgers, and grilled vegetables
Awesome Steak Sauce loves hearty grilled food: a juicy steak, a burger, ribs, or grilled chicken. Even a simple cheese sandwich gains character with a dollop of it.
When paired with a seared steak, its savory profile matches the char of the meat, and both elevate each other. It also tastes great with fried potatoes and colorful grilled vegetables, and as a spoonful in a homemade sauce, it’s a natural. Garry Sullivan’s sauce with the crocodile
Behind The Original Australian is Garry Sullivan, an Australian chef who developed his first barbecue sauces in the 1980s and has defined the brand for over 25 years.
Trained at the William Angliss Institute and Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, Garry opened his first restaurant in Port Melbourne in 1976 and later worked in kitchens across Sydney and the Gold Coast. In the eighties and nineties, he won awards in the USA and Canada for his barbecue sauces, ribs, and mustards.
In 2015, he received the rare honorary "Black Hat" title in his homeland, an honor held by only a few Australian chefs. His trademark is the crocodile, that cheeky reptile inspired by "Crocodile Dundee" – the film that took theaters by storm in 1986.
This 250 ml bottle brings a piece of Down Under to your grill without the long journey. Hats off. You can find more from Garry's kitchen in our collection of grill sauces from The Original Australian.
Stir well to incorporate the raisin paste
We set the bottle aside briefly before serving and give it a good shake to ensure the raisin paste is evenly distributed. A spoonful as a dip next to fries or sweet potatoes, another for marinating the day before – that’s how you get the most out of it. Once opened, it keeps well in the fridge and will accompany you through the entire grilling season. And when guests come over, put the Tomato Ketchup for Grownups on the table too.
