The "Rotliegend" clay-slate soils display a wonderful, distinct, and characteristic minerality that is impossible to resist: warm and spicy with a wealth of exotic fruit notes. Harmonious, juicy Riesling fruit with delicate acidity and wonderful finesse. The 2024 shows a multi-faceted bouquet of green apple, yellow peach, ripe apricot, and subtle citrus notes. On the palate, the fruity sweetness combines with a fine minerality reminiscent of wet pebbles – clear and precise on the finish.
Winery & Origin
The Gunderloch estate in Nackenheim is one of the most renowned producers on the "Rheinterrasse," manages 14 hectares of vineyards, and is a member of the VDP. The Jean Baptiste is made from grapes harvested from the renowned Grand Cru terraces: Nackenheimer Rothenberg, Niersteiner Pettenthal, and Hipping – this diversity gives the wine both style and the strength of its origin. On the glowing red soils of the "Roter Hang," the Riesling grapes grow in steep vineyards that flatten out and open toward the Rhine. The vineyards are cultivated in an environmentally friendly manner, with gentle care and maintenance. Soft pruning, natural fertilization, yield reduction via bunch thinning and green harvesting, and selective manual picking in several passes are mandatory here. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks. The wines remain on the fine lees until spring, which provides stability and good aging potential while supporting the development of aromas. Subsequent aging in 600-liter wooden barrels perfects the characteristic Gunderloch taste: cool and mineral, with crystal-clear fruit and vibrant, well-integrated acidity.
