Typical character of the Roter Hang Riesling
The Riesling Roter Schiefer is defined by its origin in the best sense of the word. The red clay slate soils here display a wonderful, distinct minerality that is impossible to resist: warm and spicy with a wealth of exotic fruit notes. Harmonious, juicy Riesling fruit with delicate acidity and wonderful finesse. The 2024 Roter Schiefer Riesling shows marvelous tension and spice on the nose, very typical for the Roter Hang: warm stone notes, herbs, summer apple, and grapefruit – at the same time clear and structured with an engaging minerality.
Terroir and winemaker philosophy
The Gunderloch estate manages three Grand Cru vineyards along the Roter Hang: Rothenberg, Pettenthal, and Hipping. The characteristic red clay slate imparts the wine with subtle depth, concentrated fruit, and spicy elegance. On the glowing red soils of the Roter Hang, the Riesling grapes grow in steep vineyards that flatten out and open toward the Rhine. The vineyards are farmed organically, cultivated and cared for with minimal intervention. Gentle pruning, natural fertilization, yield reduction through cluster splitting and thinning, and selective manual harvesting in several passes are mandatory here. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks. The wines remain on the fine lees until spring, which provides stability and good aging potential, and supports the development of aromas. Subsequent maturation in 600-liter wooden barrels perfects the characteristic Gunderloch taste: minerally cool, with crystal-clear fruit and vibrant, well-integrated acidity.
Enjoyment & versatility
This quaffable estate wine, which displays fine fruit aromas of yellow stone fruit and citrus notes alongside the minerality of the red slate, is an animating food companion thanks to its very balanced flavor profile. With 12% alcohol and maturation in stainless steel (partially large wooden barrels), the 2024 vintage offers fine acidity, thirst-quenching freshness, and charming creaminess – a perfect accompaniment to herb-crusted schnitzel, seasoned vegetables, gnocchi, or Asian sweet-and-sour dishes.
