Truffes Fantaisie in a golden Parisian metal tin

Mathez Truffes Fantaisie in the 500g metal tin are French cocoa truffles with a soft center, rolled in dark cocoa powder. Two 250g bags are housed in a golden tin with a Parisian design—made for sharing, not for secretly polishing off alone.

Inside the golden metal tin are 500g of Truffes Fantaisie—the powdery cocoa truffles that have been Chocolat Mathez's hallmark since 1934. It contains two individually wrapped 250g bags, so the second one stays fresh while the first is already making the rounds. Slightly chilled, the chocolate truffles slowly reveal their center, and the cocoa flavor lingers.

Soft center under a dark cocoa shell

Each truffle has a dry layer of cocoa powder on the outside and a center that melts instantly on the tongue.

The first impression is tart and dark, then it turns creamy, and the sweetness of the ganache arrives late and subdued. This is the trick of the cocoa shell: it takes the intensity out of the filling and lets the pure cocoa speak. Bold but light, tart but never bitter—and before you know it, you're reaching for a second one. The finish leaves a dry cocoa note that calls for coffee, not sugar.

The collectible golden tin

For Mathez, the metal tin is more than just packaging—it has been part of the brand for decades and is constantly being redesigned. The colors and motifs change, so collectors rarely have the same tin on their shelves twice.

This edition comes in gold with Parisian motifs, chic and with a wink, entirely to the French taste. Once the truffles have been eaten, the tin remains and finds a new purpose—for buttons, tea bags, or the next little gift. This way, a piece of Mathez travels with you even after the last bite.

A recipe from Anjou, unchanged since 1934

Behind the tin is Chocolat Mathez from Châteauneuf-sur-Sarthe in Anjou, where Alaüs Mathez hand-molded the first cocoa truffle in 1934.

The original recipe of soft ganache and West African cocoa remains the foundation for all varieties to this day. In the 1990s, gourmet entrepreneur Éric Fischer expanded the selection, but he left the pure original untouched. Today, the golden tins can be found on shelves in over 40 countries—the 500g edition is for those who don't want to keep running back for more.

To this day, the truffles are made in the typical conical shape: the soft ganache is portioned and rolled in dark cocoa powder. The more evenly this coating is applied, the cleaner the separation between the tart exterior and the creamy interior—craftsmanship you can taste.

Open when guests arrive

When the open tin sits in the middle of the table with coffee or espresso, everyone helps themselves—this is how Truffes Fantaisie are best enjoyed. Because there are two separate bags inside, you can give the tin away with a clear conscience and still keep enough for yourself. If you like, place two or three truffles next to a dessert—a strong espresso or a glass of port wine are good companions that make the dark cocoa seem even deeper.

If you prefer a smaller amount, you can find the same truffles in the golden 250g ballotin; as an edible gift, the tin is a great choice in our gifts section, and more varieties await in the Mathez chocolate truffles collection. One final note: the truffles are heat-sensitive and only travel at temperatures up to 20 degrees—in summer, it is better to choose chilled express shipping.

Mathez Truffes Fantaisie
