Questions about Cointreau Truffles – 500g?

We are happy to help you with Mathez.

Truffes Fantaisie Cointreau, dark cocoa meets orange

Mathez Truffes Fantaisie Cointreau are French chocolate truffles infused with Cointreau orange liqueur, rolled in dark cocoa powder and packaged in an orange 500g metal tin. The soft cocoa center has an orange aroma, and the truffles contain alcohol—a classic choice for after dinner.

Truffes Fantaisie Cointreau combine Chocolat Mathez’s powdery original recipe with the famous Cointreau orange liqueur. The liqueur is incorporated into the soft ganache made from West African cocoa, giving it a fruity, tart orange flavor. There are two 250g bags inside the orange metal tin, totaling 500g—best enjoyed slightly chilled, as the cocoa and orange flavors gradually unfold. The orange tin hints at what’s inside from the moment you see it.

Dark cocoa and a scent of orange

At the first bite, the dark cocoa takes center stage, followed by the orange aroma of the Cointreau, which adds a bright, fruity layer.

Dark chocolate and orange are an old pairing, and here they harmonize beautifully: the cocoa provides depth, the liqueur adds freshness, and the dark shell creates a tart frame. Tart, fruity, warming—these are truffles meant to be savored in the evening rather than the morning. The finish leaves a subtle bitterness from the orange peel and cocoa, which pairs perfectly with the last sip of coffee.

A collaboration with Maison Cointreau

For these truffles, Mathez has partnered with Maison Cointreau, the house that has been distilling this orange liqueur for over a hundred years. It is the only liqueur to have earned a name on the Mathez tin.

Both are located in the same corner of France: Mathez in the northern Anjou region and Cointreau near Angers, both in the Maine-et-Loire department. About 5% of the ganache is liqueur, enough for a clear orange aroma without the alcohol becoming overpowering. Cointreau itself blends sweet and bitter orange peels to achieve its clear taste, and this exact balance is reflected in the truffle. Thus, the cocoa remains the steady beat, while the orange sings the melody above it.

Truffes Fantaisie from Anjou, since 1934

The base is the original from Chocolat Mathez, where Alaüs Mathez crafted the first cocoa truffle in Châteauneuf-sur-Sarthe in 1934.

In the 1990s, under entrepreneur Éric Fischer, the era of various flavors began, and the collaboration with Cointreau is one of the most elegant. Today, these orange tins, like their golden counterparts, travel to over 40 countries, bringing a piece of Anjou to the world. A French liqueur in a French truffle—it doesn't get much more complete than that.

A little digestif you can chew

Served after a meal with an espresso or a small glass of Cointreau, the liqueur and the truffle pick up on the same orange notes and enhance each other. They also pair well with a piece of dark orange tart or vanilla ice cream with a touch of orange zest. Because these truffles contain alcohol, they are best suited for an adult evening rather than a children's party.

If you prefer them without alcohol, you can find the pure Truffes Fantaisie in the gold tin; for something sweet and salty, try the caramel variety, and you can find all options among the Mathez chocolate truffles. One final note: the truffles are heat-sensitive and only ship at temperatures up to 20°C—in the summer, it is best to choose our refrigerated express shipping.

Mathez Truffes Fantaisie
