Pinot Blanc, a lean food companion from the Palatinate
The Philipp Kuhn Pinot Blanc 2023 is a dry VDP.Gutswein from the Palatinate. Lean, lively, with delicate Pinot fruit. Not a heavy, oak-aged Pinot, but a modern Pinot Blanc for every day.
Philipp Kuhn Pinot Blanc 2023 is a modern, lean white wine from the Palatinate, vinified dry and with moderate alcohol. The Pinot grapes grow around Laumersheim, Dirmstein, and Großkarlbach. Let yourself be surprised by this quiet charm, which never pushes itself into the foreground yet pairs with almost anything.
Pear, dried apple, walnut
In the glass, the Pinot Blanc appears bright and clear. The nose is fragrant with fresh pears, dried apple, sweet melon, and a hint of walnut.
On the palate, it is lively, lean, and mineral, with fresh acidity and a rather restrained bouquet. With 3.4 g/l residual sugar and 6.6 g/l acidity, it remains dry and balanced. It is precisely this restraint that makes it the quintessential food companion.
This is the strength of Pinot Blanc: it doesn't need to be loud to be convincing. Where a Sauvignon shouts, the Pinot Blanc whispers, and that is precisely why it pairs with so many dishes without overpowering them. Honest, fresh, effortless—that’s how it drinks throughout the week.
For us, it hits the table with fish
Pinot Blanc likes fine, not-too-heavy cuisine. It particularly enjoys accompanying fish and light meat, vegetarian dishes, and mild vegetable cuisine.
For us, it hits the table at 10 to 12 degrees with pan-seared fish, light poultry, or a vegetable risotto. It does not like too much acidity or heat in food. Those looking to taste further through the winery’s range can reach for the creamy Pinot Gris from Loess or the fresh Riesling Tradition from the same cellar.
Whole-cluster pressing around Laumersheim
The Pinot grapes grow on the limestone and loess-loam soils around Laumersheim, Dirmstein, and Großkarlbach. These soils give the wine its invigorating freshness and fine minerality.
Philipp Kuhn harvests the grapes by hand at the right moment. After whole-cluster pressing, the must ferments slowly over several weeks and remains on the lees until bottling, aged in stainless steel tanks. The longer the lees contact, the rounder the wine. "It has to be dry," is Philipp's mantra for all his wines.
He bottled his first vintage in 1992; today, the estate manages around 40 hectares and has been a member of the VDP since 2008. At 11.5% vol, the Pinot Blanc is a lean VDP.Gutswein for every day. You can find more from the Palatinate among the other wines from Philipp Kuhn.
Ten to twelve degrees for the delicate fruit
At 10 to 12 degrees, the Pinot Blanc shows off its delicate fruit most beautifully. It is vinified vegan—a reliable companion for the whole week, for quiet evenings, and for uncomplicated dinner parties. It tastes best freshly opened; it holds up well in the fridge for one to two days. Its fine Pinot fruit unfolds most clearly in a wide-bowled white wine glass. Lean, fresh, uncomplicated.
