Blanc de Noirs Brut Nature, Winzersekt from the Palatinate
The 2018 Philipp Kuhn Blanc de Noirs Brut Nature is a VDP.Sekt made from 100 percent Pinot Noir, matured using the traditional bottle fermentation method. Dry, refined, with long lees aging. Not a sweet party sparkler, but a winemaker's sekt with no dosage.
Philipp Kuhn Blanc de Noirs Brut Nature 2018 is a white vintage sparkling wine made from red grapes, pressed from 100 percent Pinot Noir in the Palatinate. Brut Nature means: no dosage, thoroughly dry. Let yourself be surprised by this fine effervescence, which comes from 30 months of patience on the lees.
Stone fruit, hazelnut, a hint of brioche
Even in the nose, the Blanc de Noirs shows a distinct Pinot Noir fullness. On the palate, yellow stone fruit, roasted hazelnut, brioche, and fresh undergrowth follow.
Although it is fully fermented out, the spontaneously fermented Brut Nature surprises with a wonderful extract sweetness and very fine perlage. At 12.5% vol and only 0.5 g/l residual sugar, it remains bone dry. That is how sekt should be.
Creamy, refined, complex—the Blanc de Noirs captivates your palate. It possesses the fullness of a Pinot Noir and the elegance of a fine sparkling wine, without ever seeming sweet.
An aperitif for the white wine glass
The Blanc de Noirs is a wonderfully classic aperitif. It likes light starters such as Vitello Tonnato or smoked salmon just as much as a creamy mushroom risotto with turbot.
As an aperitif at 7 to 9 degrees Celsius, it makes its classic appearance—in a white wine glass rather than a narrow flute—so that it can breathe. It is a fine companion to smoked salmon or Vitello Tonnato. For those who want to taste more from the winery, choose the still Blanc de Noir from Pinot Noir or the fruity Rosé from Saignée.
Thirty months of patience on the lees
The Pinot Noir grapes come from the best sites in Laumersheim and Großkarlbach and are harvested by hand. Because the red color pigments are only in the berry skin, they are pressed gently, resulting in an almost white juice.
The base wine matures 60 percent in small wooden barrels and 40 percent in steel tanks, with 30 months of lees aging. The longer the sparkling wine rests on the lees, the finer its perlage in the glass. The second fermentation happens in the bottle, *méthode traditionnelle*, without shortcuts.
"Palatine Champagne" is what Philipp affectionately calls his Blanc de Noirs. After disgorgement, he tops up the bottle with original raw sekt, so the wine remains dry—that is, Brut Nature. Philipp bottled his first vintage in 1992; today, the winery manages around 40 hectares. You can find more from the Palatinate among the other wines from Philipp Kuhn.
With a good sparkling wine stopper, it lasts two days
Well-chilled at 7 to 9 degrees, the Blanc de Noirs shows its fine perlage to best effect. Serve it in a white wine glass, not a slender flute, so its bouquet can unfold. It is most vibrant when freshly opened, but it will keep for one to two days with a good sparkling wine stopper. For toasting, as an aperitif, or simply in between, a winemaker's sekt for special moments. Impressive.
