Questions about Blaufränkisch – Deutsch Schützen – 2018?

We are happy to help you with Weingut Wachter Wiesler.

Wachter-Wiesler – Blaufränkisch Deutsch Schützen

The Wachter-Wiesler Blaufränkisch Deutsch Schützen 2018 is an organic red wine made from Blaufränkisch grapes from southern Burgenland in Austria. As an "Ortswein" (village wine), this red wine carries its terroir in its name: Deutsch Schützen. Around the Deutsch Schützener Berg with its iron-rich soils, one finds a variety of rock formations and soil compositions in a very small area: oxidized greenschist, quartz phyllite, calcareous schist, or serpentinite. This red wine from a region only declared a DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) for origin-typical wine in 2010 is distinctive, mineral-spicy, dense, and powerful, with a cool vibrancy and a fine tannin structure. The Deutsch Schützen appears more powerful, robust, and dense than its village wine counterpart from the Eisenberg.

On the nose, the garnet-red Blaufränkisch Deutsch Schützen exudes dark berry fruits, cassis, and juicy cherries, which meet a savory herbal spice and graphite, complemented by earthy-mineral notes and black pepper. On the palate, the village wine is juicy with elegance and cool finesse, vibrantly delicate yet firmly structured, with a salty finish. The Wachter-Wiesler Deutsch Schützen Eisenberg DAC Reserve is a price-to-pleasure experience at the very highest Blaufränkisch level.

Blaufränkisch – Vinification

The Blaufränkisch grapes, harvested late by hand between mid and late October 2018, come from 35-40-year-old vines planted on heavy, iron-rich clay soils with gravel and sand in the Weinberg, Ratschen, and Bründlgfangen vineyards of the municipality of Deutsch Schützen in the Eisenberg DAC in southern Burgenland. The vineyards are sun-drenched, stony, and relatively flat, and, in addition to their unique soils, are shaped by the Pannonian-Illyrian climate. Christoph Wachter manages the Wachter-Wiesler estate's vineyards organically with a great deal of manual labor and care. After the harvest, the grapes remain on the skins for 21 days, partly in wooden fermentation vats and partly in steel, fermenting spontaneously with natural vineyard yeasts before being gently pressed. They then undergo malolactic fermentation and mature for 24 months in traditional, large wooden barrels (1500l). Bottled unfined and unfiltered in the summer of 2020.
