Franz Weninger – Blaufränkisch – [BIO]
The Franz Weninger Blaufränkisch 2019 is an organic red wine from Burgenland. Its grapes grow partly on calcareous, warm soils around Ritzing, and partly on moist, cooler clay-loam soils with a high proportion of coarse material on the plateau around Horitschon, i.e., in Austria near Lake Neusiedl. Thus, this Blaufränkisch, as an introduction to the Weninger wine world, shows the complexity of the Central Burgenland soils, which bring depth and finesse to the glass.
On the nose, juicy sour cherry, black olives, and many dark berries, tart elderberry with a piquant herbal spice dance together. In the glass, an intense ruby red already makes the mouth water. On the palate, the Weninger Blaufränkisch shows unrestrained drinkability, crisp acidity, juicy freshness, immensely cool red fruitiness, and spicy tannins – not a flatterer in the mouth, but rather an attention-grabber. The perfect entry into Franz's Blaufränkisch league!
Franz Weninger – Wine Production
The Blaufränkisch grapes for this natural wine come from around 20 different plots of vineyards around Horitschon and Ritzing in Central Burgenland, Austria. 5000 vines in a Guyot vine training system per hectare compete for water and nutrients and root deep into the soil. The 5-35 year old vines are located between 260 and 305 meters above sea level. Petra and Franz Weninger cultivate the vineyards of the Weninger winery organically and biodynamically; they are Demeter and Respekt certified. The Blaufränkisch grapes were selectively hand-picked from early to mid-September 2019. After harvesting, the grapes remain on the mash for 10 days in large wooden vats, after which they are gently pressed and spontaneously fermented. The Blaufränkisch matured for 18 months in large wooden vats, underwent a natural, biological malolactic fermentation, and was bottled unfiltered with low sulfur addition (15mg/l) in 32,000 bottles in February 2022.
